An angry Belfast woman has told how a parcel she sent to England “boomeranged” back and forth five times between Northern Ireland and London.
The package, checked at least 10 times on both sides of the Irish Sea, was finally delivered 12 days after it was posted.
The woman, who paid for 24-hour tracking and didn’t wish to be named, watched in frustration online as a birthday present for her niece became the subject of a Royal Mail pass the parcel.
She said: “The poster says sending a parcel doesn’t need to be a mission, but for me it was mission impossible.
“After my niece said she didn’t get the present the day it was due to arrive, I called a helpline several times, but the people there didn’t help solve the mystery.
“I was determined that the package wouldn’t be lost forever, so I kept on looking for answers.”
It was later discovered that while she had written the correct delivery address on the parcel, an assistant at a Post Office in Northern Ireland had added the wrong postcode on a digital label, writing BT1 (Belfast) instead of TW1 (Twickenham).
The woman said: “That’s where the confusion set in, and in a comedy of errors, the package kept on pinging hither and thither across the Irish Sea.
“(Eventually), someone looked at the correctly addressed parcel properly and not the incorrect postal label.”
Royal Mail said: “Our automated sorting machines read and route over a billion parcels each year, based on the provided barcode or postcode, not the handwritten address.
“That’s why postcode accuracy is essential when sending an item through Royal Mail’s network.”

Probably just luck that it's gone to a manual sorting (reject) selection on a PSM. I'd imagine that in any MC with a PSM that all packets will go to the machines first and only get manually sorted if they're rejected by the machine.
