Dunno about banding together, more like tilting at windmills.
Never heard anyone yet discussing Republicanism in it's various forms at our branch meetings.

Nobody in the real world actually thinks like this, you realise that? If we had a gate meeting at my DO and you said that, most people would look at you confused.

Good portion of our DO cant stand the monarchy. Most people are totally apathetic but I would expect a leader of a trade union to have a pretty staunch stance on the matter.Seymour Buts wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 12:17Nobody in the real world actually thinks like this, you realise that? As for the real world. I live in the real world. As do my friends and family. I know a fair few that do in fact think like this.

and why would we. Up until now its not really been a topic of conversation but now our leader has just been bestowed an honour from them I think perhaps that discussion should be had. The CWU has held a stance on many things outside of its direct remit, why not this.

Why can't they stand the monarchy? I'm indifferent towards it, but the idea that becoming a Republic would make one difference to people given the problems we face is for the birds. It's a glorified tourist attraction.Ren Hoëk wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 14:18Good portion of our DO cant stand the monarchy. Because it flies on the face of our democratic values and the idea that we should live and continue to strive towards a meritocratic society. Its gross.Seymour Buts wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 14:32Why can't they stand the monarchy? As for the tourism. It wouldnt change one iota. In fact, we could turf them out of their homes and open it all up to tourism. Huge amounts of art is locked away by them as well. Windsor castle wouldn't disappear. Just ask the french how they are getting on without theirs.
You do you.

For the record, I couldn't care less for the monarchy, but I also couldn't care less about these same tired old arguments for becoming a republic.="Ren Hoëk" post_id=1131427 time=1750081142 user_id=90609]

Judging by the amount of people who queue for hours to see things like the Trooping of the Colour, Changing of the Guard, Kings Birthday, Xmas morning church visit, Remembrance Day, etc etc, the people themselves are indeed the attraction.
You'd have to be naive in the extreme to believe that any of the residences or art work would make it into public ownership were the monarchy to be abolished, or that anyone would pay good money to see run-down empty residences.
If they just wanted to see castles, crowns, coaches with horses, princesses, thrones, flunkeys etc then Walt Disney does it far better, and you get sunshine guaranteed.

The same old tired arguments are the same as they were then and as they are now. It hasn’t changed because these cretins still exist.Tman wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 16:35For the record, I couldn't care less for the monarchy, but I also couldn't care less about these same tired old arguments for becoming a republic.="Ren Hoëk" post_id=1131427 time=1750081142 user_id=90609]

Re: Vote of no confidence in CWU leadership.
Because the arguments against the monarchy are so weak. Getting rid of them would be deeply divisive, for what gain? And replaced by what? Somebody elected? So yet another politician for everybody to hate.Ren Hoëk wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 17:18The same old tired arguments are the same as they were then and as they are now. Prince Harry didn't get his tax funded bodyguards...thats how ridiculous monarchy nonsense is.Seymour Buts wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 18:05Because the arguments against the monarchy are so weak. To be replaced by a democratically elected head of state. Just like plenty of other countries do.Seymour Buts wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025, 18:05Because the arguments against the monarchy are so weak. If its divisive to get rid. Its divisive to keep.
I also don't think the arguments are weak. To me, the entire concept of monarchy in a modern forward looking nation is perverse. An institution that only belongs in fairy tales.

Re: Vote of no confidence in CWU leadership.
Exactly what I'm thinking. The 4 pillars agreement in 2018 had a shared commitment between RM and the CWU to work towards a shorter working week, specifically a drive to 35 hours per week to reflect the increased automation/less indoor work and longer delivery spans. We have come a long way since then with the senior management team's priorities shifting towards cost cutting. And increasing workloads and staff shortages have made the idea of reducing hours even more remote.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
