I think you should rephrase that, or at least qualify it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I suspect what you have seen vis saving jobs is not so much the CWU saving many jobs. Rather, it is a competent colleague (albeit a union rep) coming to the aid of another colleague in distress and helping them to respond to or rebut any matters relating to disciplinary, IHR, etc. In the real world colleagues can, and do, support one another even when one or other doesn’t belong to a union.

I’m specifically talking about area reps coming to my office to deal with situations that could well have ended in dismissal, seen it numerous times in my 30 odd years , by all means be critical of the hierarchy of the CWU but the reps on the ground have saved many jobs .Worth baring in mind before cancelling your membership.

Fair enough, I can definitely agree with that.

Been in job 30 years,the area reps used to be around my office regularly challenging management over things,….nowadays barely see them,they tend to use the “put in a grievance” line….

Anything at ground level,they don’t want to know,it’s like all fight has gone out of them and hands are tied.

Strictly from a pragmatic point of view, a mediocre union (as opposed to an outright corrupt one, which we absolutely don't have) is better than no union at all.

If we had to pay more than pocket change in dues, it would be different but we don't, so...
