Royal Mail won't replace post box damaged in Wrexham crash despite concerns

ROYAL Mail has confirmed they will not be replacing a post box in a Wrexham village after it was damaged following a crash.

The former post box, located on the corner of Coed-y-Felin Road and Green Road in Brymbo, was decommissioned by the Royal Mail following a road traffic accident in which it was damaged beyond repair.

Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has slammed the Royal Mail for not looking after their customers in the village following the incident.

Mr Rowlands recently joined Wrexham County Borough Councillor and chairman of Brymbo Community Council Paul Rogers and Brymbo Community Councillor Will Martin at the site.

Royal Mail has directed residents to alternative Post Box locations, specifically the Brymbo Post Office at the Brymbo Enterprise Centre and Plas Dur in Pentre Broughton.

These locations are situated approximately half a mile from the original site and require a climb of over 100ft.

Mr Rowlands said: “I was contacted by the councillors after hearing about their concerns over Royal Mail not replacing a post box which had been damaged when it was hit by a vehicle in a road traffic accident.

“I understand that the post box was taken away and now residents, many of whom are elderly, must walk nearly half a mile up a hill to post their letters.

“I have since taken up the issue personally and contacted Royal Mail. Despite a clear inconvenience caused to Brymbo residents, Royal Mail has shown a concerning unwillingness to resolve this issue.”

In a joint statement, Councillors Rogers and Martin said: “We have received lots of complaints about the post box being taken away and we share the concerns of local residents who used the facility.

“Obviously the damaged box had to be taken away, but we cannot understand why it was not simply replaced.

"We are calling on Royal Mail to reconsider their position and would like to invite their representatives to a site visit to discuss this issue.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We understand the concerns of local residents and appreciate how important access to a post box can be for the community.

"In this case, there are six post boxes within half a mile of the previous location, including two less than 400 metres away – Ofcom requires us to ensure that 98% of UK households are within half a mile of a post box.

“After taking into account the current level of provision and operational needs, we have decided not to replace this post box.

"However, we want to reassure customers that postal access in the area remains well served, and we remain committed to providing reliable and convenient services.”
