Locking yourself out of van

They’ve brought that stupid yo-yo gadget in attached to van key for exactly this reason.

My only complaint is the yo-yo devices are very poor quality — I am on my fourth one already. But they’re not at all stupid. I can think of many security and safety reasons why the keys should be tethered to the driver at all times. Perhaps a key reason is it could save you potentially being killed by a drug addict stealing your van and its contents while dragging you along as you try to cling to the bonnet. Extreme, I know, but still…

I jumped out van and left keys in ignition and the van locked itself. I was down a farm road and the customer came to meet me, split second decision to jump out and get parcel from back. Front doors of van locked and got.a.1 years serious

One of those cases where you can be unlucky or get away with it.
Back in my PHG days i would just send the spare keys out if that were possible,
and i know many others did the same, no need to involve the manager unless necessary.
However, you know you should not do it, so if you get caught out its your lookout, and yes it has happened to me.
Something recently pointed out when we were reminded of this recently.
We have a number of rurals in isolated areas, during the winter months these could lead to turning off and
then starting the engine again about 200 times, often within a few seconds, not what it is designed to do.
This has led to issues with the vans in cold weather.
There are plenty of rural locations where you can pull up to deliver the mail while literally still touching the van,
it does seem a bit over the top.

It's not real difference stopping & starting a van on a rural duty as it is doing a city DPR duty, the company policy is clear and it's up to them to meet the costs of any repairs required by constantly stopping and starting a van, not for us to worry about any increased costs to the business.

Agree, but when it's 0 degrees C or less, snowing, at 1500 hrs and you're 25 miles from your office and your battery/starter motor is not at it's best, then it's tempting to leave it running while you nip the ten yards to the letterbox for 'The Chestnuts' when there's nothing else around for miles apart from a crow laughing at you.

Or you can wait two and half hours (at least) for the RAC to turn up when the battery/starter motor die on you.

Exactly, there is a difference between Town and Rural delivery.
Pulling up outside a farm letterbox, which is a quarter of a mile down a track, off a B road,
really only used by locals, with a panoramic view all around is different.
With our ageing and rapidly deteriorating fleet, in freezing weather, its tempting
to jump out and leave it running.

Whether it's tempting or not isn't really the point, it's similar to door stepping etc, we all know the rules and if we get caught breaking them we haven't really got a leg to stand on.

Do you reckon the new owner of RM will put dashcams and in-cab cameras into all vans and lorries? I think at the very least we'll see dashcams added.
