Oxford east MP Anneliese Dodds has arranged a public meeting with Royal Mail due to continuing 'poor service'.


Ms Dodds said more than 400 constituents have been in touch with her about the service's 'failings' since 2021.

She said her staff have had to deal with the 'serious consequences' of these delays for 'vitally important' documents.

The meeting will take place on Saturday, March 29 from 12.30 to 1pm 'to force Royal Mail to listen and take urgent action'. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Ms Dodds said: "Local residents have missed hospital appointments, invitations to weddings and funerals, important work and business-related mail, and family communications like birthday cards.

"They also sometimes receive time-limited publications very late and receive mail for the wrong address."

Ms Dodds said it is 'unacceptable' that the matter remains still unresolved, despite her 'numerous interventions' since first raising this issue with the service six years ago.

"Numerous temporary fixes have been made over the years that have temporarily restored some order, but the underlying issues have remained."

The Labour MP has visited the East Oxford sorting office a number of times to discuss with staff and management how they can improve the service they provide in the area.

She said she is hoping to do the same again soon, adding: "I believe that local staff have been doing all they can to improve the service and that our postal workers understand how services can be improved.

"To that end, I have continually urged Royal Mail to listen to what their workforce is saying about what could be done to improve things, and I have met with local representatives of the postal workers’ union, the CWU.

"In their most recent reply, they have urged me to publicise the number of vacancies they have; they also pointed out a number of changes they have apparently made to routes and so on, which they say will help with delays.


"This is an issue that I’ll keep pushing on."

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: "Our service in Oxford has improved in recent months and, with a recruitment campaign ongoing, we are continuing to make progress.

"A Royal Mail representative will be present on Saturday to listen to feedback and set out steps to further improve the service locally."

These half witted MPs really get on your tits. They haven’t been interested in the goings on at RM despite the workforce trying to highlight for years what has been going on & what the end result will be. In fact when we were on strike many called us lazy greedy b******s who should get back to work despite being told many times that our strike unlike other workforce’s wasn’t about pay but the destruction of the service.

I was hearing about "" The Evil Rich " when I got off my backside at 18 and worked ever since. People are just making excuses for the bone idle. In the 80s they were crying out for work. Now they cry out for benefits despite work out there. The problem is , a life time of working and saving make me one of "" the rich "" they need to steal from to keep young people on welfare. I can't keep working until I'm in my 80s . Hence the unfilled vacancies at RM

MP for East Oxford Anneliese Dodds has held Royal Mail to account over the continuing 'appalling' service.

A public meeting was held by the Labour MP with representatives from the mail service on Saturday, March 29 at Cheney School in Headington.

The meeting saw around 45 people attend in person, which is around 10 per cent of the number of people who have contacted Ms Dodds about the issues.

A number of issues regarding the postal service in the area were discussed, including the inaccessibility of the sorting office in Ledgers Close, both in terms of getting there by public transport and limited opening hours.

The meeting was described by the Labour MP's team as 'productive', and Royal Mail has promised to do a review of its practices.

Ms White, did not disclose her first name and lives in central Oxford less than half a mile from the Oxpens sorting office, has since told us that the postal service where she lives is 'appalling'.


"We count ourselves lucky if the postman comes round more than once a week. Some first class important letters have taken eight weeks to arrive," she said.

"As well as the slowness of delivery, I know that several items such bank statements, PIN numbers, driving licence communications, vouchers of monetary value, birthday cards, time dependent publications have never been delivered at all.

"And they are just the ones I know about!"

Sandra Bailey, who lives in the Wood Farm area of Oxford, has still not received her Mother's Day card from her daughter.

She said: "The reason why I am upset that I didn't get my card is my daughter was adopted when I was 17 and we did not meet each other until she was 48.

"She has always sent me a card but last year it was two days late, and again this year its not arrived on time.

"I really cannot understand what is happening with the delivery."

Royal Mail claims letters not delivered on the expected day are prioritised the following day.

Ms Dodds said: "I'm so grateful to everyone who came to the meeting that I've just held with Royal Mail.

"Many residents came so that they could have their say about what has been unfortunately a very unreliable service in many parts of Oxford East.

"People have missed hospital appointments, they've missed key family events. They've also missed receiving legal documents as well. We heard about all of that in the meeting.

"But I am grateful to Royal Mail for actually coming here to hear directly from people about the problems they've experienced, and also to talk about the solutions. I know they are focused on recruitment and on retention.

"We talked a lot about that, how we can try and work together to improve this situation, and I really hope we can see those measures being taken because people in Oxford deserve a much more reliable postal service."

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Ensuring everyone’s items arrive on time is our highest priority. On Saturday, we met with the local MP and members of the public to listen to and discuss their service issues.

"We acknowledge there have, at times, been disruption to the service, largely due to lower staffing levels and difficulties with recruiting.

“This is an issue we are actively seeking to resolve; we are currently hiring for permanent roles and as helpfully agreed at the meeting, will be working with the MPs office to advertise positions.

"In the meantime, we are using temporary workers to help ensure items arrive within the times expected.

"We thank customers for their patience as we work to improve their service.”
