Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
I said it before, but the past 5 or so years have been an excellent 'trial' of these new methods and guess what, they've not worked.
Duties being left with multiple days mail can't be completed once they finally put someone on them. Same with sending out people to do tracked and specials only on some routes - can't be done, never mind adding in 1st class letters too.
Dangling a few extra Saturdays off, which look impossible to staff, isn't going to make the impossible possible.
But what do we know...

Can you explain how it took longer? Surely if there were two of you then any two DPR arcels close to one and other would've been done at the same time no??Smoothbackground wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 19:16Over Xmas I did encounter a manager or two who seemed to think having a “van assistant” would somehow increase productivity. Having tried it a few times, usually on account of there being no spare van for the “van assistant” to go out with his own parcel route, it — predictably — was a complete disaster and actually ended up taking longer than if on your own…

Honestly can't see how it takes longer, drivers pull into street and driver takes pkts for 2 or 3 doors and assistant takes 2 or 3 for other doors.

If doing that on a parcel route which is over a large distance- then yeah - it isn't going to be efficient.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 19:16Over Xmas I did encounter a manager or two who seemed to think having a “van assistant” would somehow increase productivity. When running out of time and needing to clear the Tracked, managers in our office claim that it's more efficient if the van-driver goes and does parcels alone, while the passenger continues doing the typical letter/parcel loops. I am not so sure about this....
On a van-share round that is compact - going round together doing parcels can be quick. Driver doesn't have to keep stopping as much. As long as you manage it efficiently giving each person the same amount of parcels then it is efficient.

Parcelforce drivers start training on royal mail PDA systems in June and we have been told to expect a huge amount of extra Parcels from royal mail in July .
So by all accounts it looks like big changes in JULY .

Fastest way to do it because the driver doesn’t have to park properly every time.

Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
In some walks in our office the call rates easily get to 90 percent with 2 days mail and not only that but because of the wealth they also get loads of mail from each house. Then again some of the walks are so big they're impossible with one day of mail.

Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
It's more efficient having a driver and assistant than one driver alone in some areas that have a very high density of parcels but it's more efficient having two drivers in the majority of cases.
For the record I don't believe a straight Mon-fri for non drivers is a viable solution either because 5 days of delivering 2 or 3 days mail for over 5 hours without the option of rotation is ridiculous.

Having every Saturday and Sunday off will certainly help with fatigue.
It’s the least worst of all the ideas being put forward.

Neither party wants to resolve the issue properly which would mean making the duties smaller in order to maintain the current delivery spans.
Royal Mail obviously because it would reduce the level of savings.
Martin's obsession is less clear...
More Saturdays but at what cost?

I hope that members did not select ‘more Saturdays off’ as their preference in the CWU survey currently circulating because it’s a case of be careful what you wish for. More Saturdays off, becomes every Saturday off, becomes a three day week, becomes get a different job.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑08 Mar 2025, 11:42Neither party wants to resolve the issue properly which would mean making the duties smaller in order to maintain the current delivery spans.

Yeah that’s fair enough and I don’t disagree regarding people without an oh report and actual reasonable adjustments.Barnacle wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 19:12Pidleypoo wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 18:41I’m talking about those other reasonable adjustments as covered under the equalities act.Barnacle wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 17:34Anyone with a special arrangement has to make it know to their rep so that it can be accounted for in any plans.Pidleypoo wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 17:21What if the non driver has reasonable adjustments or a ring fenced duty ?Martin Walsh wrote: ↑07 Mar 2025, 02:28Let’s quote me right non drivers will be scheduled workload for the Saturday which could be indoor and outdoor such as a van assistant to the first class routes where they have high density of parcels.
Not all special arrangements will continue though, there are some nonsense arrangements in our place which will end.
They’re not nonsense.
That’s what I was referring to in the first half of my reply.
The nonsense ones aren’t covered by any act, they’re just a nonsense given to a pet.
As someone with them for a very good reason then I’m a little worried about the van assistant nonsense as it just sounds like you’ll be a leave reserve and be put anywhere on Saturdays.
