Branch Officer Roles

Post by Jaggs »

Sorry if this is a strange question to ask but do CWU branch officers still carry out their roles as royal mail employees and given release for branch work or do they permanently carry out CWU work?

Local level are released as and when so have to do the job as well. Area and div are full time release. Secretaries are full time release. All receive any supplements, bonuses etc. it's not uncommon for area reps to still do duties to get even more money. Some branch officials will not get any release or it will be unpaid release.

So the chairman of a local branch would just be release as when necessary?

Yes. Might still be plenty of unpaid release, which the CWU then covers the lost wages.

We had a visit from a union rep yesterday and they we’re approaching all those on new contracts or those who weren’t members to sign up and sounded like a hard sell and we were grilled on why we didn’t want in.Seemed very unprofessional and its clearly our decision.Made us feel very uncomfortable.Anyone else had this at their office.
