Handing in notice, how long do I need to give?

I'm waiting for pre employment checks from the council with an estimated start date of either the 4th March or 11th March but as yet I'm still waiting for them to "dot the i's and cross the T's"
If it's a 4th start then that is 3 weeks tomorrow or if it's the 11th then that will be a month from now.
I've been at RM 11 years and I'm paid weekly, I'm an OPG.
I called my rep today and he's unsure whether I need to give a week or a month but told me to get the notice in tomorrow although my line manager did give me a reference in the new job two weeks ago so he is aware of the fact I've found a new job.

A) If it is a months notice then is that down to the manager's discretion if I put my end date of employment on Monday 3rd March and may just be fine with it.

B) If I hand my notice in tomorrow with an end date of the 3rd and the start date changes to the 11th or if the job falls through for some reason then can I retract the notice and stay at RM ?

So in a nutshell is it a week or month notice?

I gave 1 week notice glad to be out the place as well. I also had worked 11 years so would think your on the 1 weeks notice, I think the newer contracts are 1 month, Best to check your contract. Good luck in your new job.

Your contract will state a week. Remember to screenshot everything on your app as it will be turned off as soon as you finish.

If you are paid weekly, then it's a weeks notice, my colleague who was on a legacy like me and paid weekly gave them a months notice recently, I did tell him he only needed to give a weeks notice but he still gave them a month, I wouldn't, 1 week and then I would be off!

Joined upto March 2018 it is one week, joined from April 2018 it is four weeks.

I gave my notice in on a Wednesday (which was my day off) and my final day was the following Tuesday.

We had one hand their notice in on the Friday before a weeks leave, that's the way to do it!

What can they do if you were on monthly and only gave a couple weeks notice, most jobs I apply for won't wait a month,.. If I get offered a job I'm just going to give a couple weeks, and I'm on a new contract.. I wish you well in your new job, don't look back!

Strictly speaking they could sue you for breech of contract. They could be entitled to payment for any expenditure directly caused by you not working your notice, this could be the cost of a temp/agency worker. Unlikely to happen, but if you have long experience of RM you'd never be surprised at their actions.

After a lot of thinking, sleepless (ISH) night and weighing up the pros and cons I've decided to definitely take the council job.
Yes it's the bins not the most attractive job plus it's a £90-100 drop in weekly wage due to the fact it's over 9 months with the winter off but a 12 month pay, I can see the tsunami of what is happening at Royal Mail. I have spoken to a few colleagues about what is around the corner here after seeing what these trials are all about and I was really surprised that not one person (apart from the rep) had a clue about the changes. I suppose I had to educate myself thanks to this forum to find out what a crap show this will be in months to come.

I see the council job as a foot in the door to do other things, the aim is to probably get on the HGV side of the bins, still 4 days weeks with 3 days weekends, something RM cannot offer us so I guess I need to restart things at the bottom again for a while.

My contract does say I only need to give a week's notice, took me ages to find the damned thing and I have sat down with my manager for a chat and I can just tell that he knows I'm doing the right thing and getting out whilst I can. Such a shame the job has come to this, I love also found out today 4 people have handed their notice in, all fairly new starters, such a shame.

Definitely the right decision. Things didn't go as I planned after I left, but they've turned out ok in the end. I'm on less money, but working at RM was costing me £40 a week to park the car. Next to no stress now, and every weekend off.

Glad you found your contract for the week's notice. As mentioned before, make sure you screen shot (or similar) all info on the App, I lost access while I was on delivery on my last day!

Will do thanks. I was paying £35 a month until recently plus there is a Wetherspoons and Greggs right near work so the lazy me was spending around £5 a day, 5 days a week which itself was £25 a week, I'll be saving that as I'll need to take my own packup anyway as they eat whilst they are out. I'll make a slight few adjustments in my food shopping so will probably get that £100 loss to £50 loss a week so definitely a lot better.

Is it a part-time job? How are you earning £100 a week less with the council?
