Would be nice if we could just scan a barcode on a york with our duties parcels on it and it uploads all the parcels in one scan.
I think smoothbackground has mentioned previously that Amazon sort of do that in that your parcels are allocated to your route, put into "boxes" I'm assuming for areas that you load into the van, perhaps royal mail will send an undercover worker so they can copy more of others processes that they do better than us

What I don’t get is when you scan the thing then have to select the address manually from a list as long as your arm made up of all the addresses on that street.

It should in theory be able to grab that data from the data generated by us scanning them to yorks in the MC. I just needs for all DOs to make sure that the data in Route Planner for all their walks has been updated and is kept up to date.
I know nothing about how Royal Mail's systems work, but that to me sounds like something basic...

I can only assume they do not do it because parcels can go missing between MC and DO. If I scan my walk and all my parcels that have been scanned at the MC appear, but some of those parcels are missing from my york, then Royal Mail are less likely to know where a missing parcel has got to, or might accuse the duty holder of losing the parcel....

I guess Royal Mail would have to weigh up how much time this would save a postie each day versus how many more parcels may disappear and be harder to locate.

On the face of it - with it saving ~5 minutes a day per postie nationwide...that's a lot of time saved, so surely it's worth doing, or at least trialling.
With the current system once the york enters the DO, the system deems all items scanned out to that york as having arrived at the DO, so RM will assume that any missing items have gone missing after arriving at the DO

Worth mentioning/clarifying that the Amazon “staging” system is not infallible. Like at RM, parcels and packets do very occasionally go missing. That said, i think more items go missing/get lost while going through RM’s ecosystem.

There would be too many Yorks (rounds) for the lorry, and I can't see them sending more lorries out.

Assuming it reached the DO and identifying the postie who failed to deliver it are two entirely different issues.

In the process ignoring that there's lots of reasons that any given parcel may not end up on the york it's been scanned out to. The system assigns the item to whatever york is "open" in the bullring for the relevant selection at the time it's scanned, but:

a) the york may have been changed between scan and sort, while the parcel is still on the belt / tipping table
b) the parcel may have been accidentally missorted
c) the parcel may have been deliberately sorted to a different york (blatantly erroneous postcode; pulled for RP attention; heavy parcel that can't reasonably be dumped on top of the existing contents of the york without crushing them)
d) probably some other cases I'm overlooking.

Anything that presumes 100% accuracy is horribly unrealistic.

For the large RM will just have the sorter scan the items and change the full yorks over. That gets rid of one problem. For the smalls it's going to only be a couple of packets each time, as you have two people sorting on the conveyor. What they might do is bring back the use of crashes and roads for the smalls
