Why should anyone get preferential treatment or “first pick” just because they started work at RM earlier than someone else?

It should go on merit surely.

Base it on the amount of steps you’ve put in for Royal Mail. Can it be verified, can it f**k. So seniority has to do. Saying that some of the newer starters have been handed cushy part time duties and others who joined at the same time have been left as reserves.

Whilst it might suck for those starting the job at 40 or above; for someone who joined when they were perhaps 19 and now have two decades of wear and tear on their body it's only right, even logical, that seniority should allow them to pick up the better duties. They can go round at their reduced pace and still clear while today's 19 year old can zip around a monster duty and still clear. It's all academic now, anyway, since the last revision rendered everything an impossible mess.

No that is definitely not right, I would think after 18 years you’re pretty high up the seniority

At our office some of the new starts have been offered rounds that some more senior staff haven’t because they went on to a temporary contract over Xmas which made their hours up to full time

The more senior staff that couldn’t reorganise their lives (mostly getting children to school issues) for a temporary full time contract have missed out on the chance of getting a permanent full time position because those on the temp contract got precedence over them

So many of the full time duties went to less senior staff but as they’ve made many of the duties into full time duties (as they all got made too big during the failed delivery 2.0 trial) that left far fewer part time duties

So duty holders on part time hours have been displaced

Plus some of the duties got ring fenced for people with disabilities/mental health issues which further decreased the number of available part time duties

So don’t know if the situation at your office is anything like ours? There won’t be any need at our place for redundancies as many of our best have handed in their notice

Sounds like our office. “So and so can do it” is a regular comment from managers. Yeah because they come in an hour early, skip break, drive the van like it’s formula1, run round sticking parcels in every bin in sight. These people ruin the job for everyone else and it never changes.

We've had meetings about local changes within our DO and been asked to vote on them. Non union members have been excluded.

The union is the official staff-side representative and, by dint of being recognised by the employer, represents all postal-grade employees. How is excluding non union members from a vote on key issues fair, or in any way democratic? How can any such vote even be representative of the workforce views? Rotten CWU.
