An OFCOM spokesperson was on BBC Breakfast talking about the proposed changes to USO (at approx 0725 if you can catch it on iplayer).

It might as well have been somebody from RM board talking. Successfully swerved the question twice about whether the potential
new way of working would lead to job losses, obviously had media training.

What’s it got to do with the Post Office

wow, just heard Dave Ward suggesting Royal Mail could do tailored services for the greetings card industry, which is something I suggested in this forum before. The only suggestion he had in the past was us posties being some sort of social service...what a crazy idea for a private company...

Anyway.... why the heck do we not sell anything! We have amazing infrastructure, we should have our own retail element, even if it is just greeting cards and flowers. We also should be able to offer a cheaper service than current 'special occasion retailers' like Moonpig and all the online flower sellers as we can deliver the items ourselves....

How hard is it to set something like this up....you just need 1 or 2 warehouses printing cards and storing flowers. The special occasion industry is huge and never going to die. People always have birthdays, christmases, bereavements, valentines days, births, weddings.

It just seems like a no-brainer.

Does Amazon even sell cards and flowers? plenty of smaller retailers do well in the special occasion industry.

Does it have to be about competing with Amazon anyway? - It's another way of making money. We have the infrastructure to deliver the items which saves £££ and would allow us to compete with other retailers. Not only that - Royal Mail is a well known brand and can easily market retail services on TV or through the post

Amazon isn't just a retailer, it does TV, Music, technology, food, delivery.....

Not saying we should do all that too.... but with the infrastructure we have it should be pretty damn easy to at least become a leading Special Occasion retailer. We deliver ruddy cards!, why can't we sell the ruddy things and earn extra money?

When they say 'we are sending 70% less letters than in the past'.... what does that mean?

Are they saying....

1. Letters nationally have dropped 70%.

2. Are they saying stamped mail is down 70% nationally.

3. Something else...please explain...

It is 100% point no 2, but the general public thinks it is point no 1 (all live mail) which RM want.

No idea what a '3 day off cover staff' is.... but I assume you will be found a place. They just said on the CWU Live that this USO change is not going to work unless they are fully staffed. They can't be having rounds not going out.
