You won't get days with just 1C letters from the MC, it's not viable these days with there being so little 1C. We'd probably still process the 1C and 2C together as normal and it'll be down to the DOs to extract any 2C that they aren't delivering. Over the last 3-4 years letters have dropped off massively, especially 1C
The plan is to have a separate sorting frame for first class, so they will get segged there.
O Lord... this time last year they wanted to abolish the frames entirely (bench sorting) now they want more.
MW talked about fatigue on deliveries. Every single delivery office is going to go through USO reform and the Union are fully on board with the adopted method change that RM are employing. Having watched the live broadcast it is all as clear as mud.
Many offices still have Wallington weeks which both Tony Bouch and MW have said that they will keep - but then MW goes on say "we can't be in the same place where 70% of people are just on a 1 in 6 standard attendance pattern" in reference to having a standard, uniform working attendance pattern across the business.
But what is the standard working attendance pattern? He talks about walking one week on the "all mail days" with Saturdays off, the following week a 1st class driving route where you're not walking and the third week delivering parcels Wednesdays to Saturdays. Never mind innovative and complicated duty structures, they are not trying to put men on the moon!! How late will the drivers be expected to finish on these 4 day weeks? Will these posties still be on the same routes? Will this trigger a revision and re-pick?
To make things a bit simpler, I've put forward a vote on what would people prefer.
What about another option. On my contract I am 5 days worked over a 6 day week but would prefer to have both days off together. This would mean one week I do Mon-Frid and get Sat and Sunday off then another week I would work Tue-Sat and get Sunday and Monday off. Far easier for the Manager to figure out a shift rota and more rest for the teams, some of whom have family that live a bit further away ....a longer stretch of time off would mean they might be able to stay over, go to a concert, have a drink etc. At the moment split days off mean you get nowhere near a work life balance as you can't plan anything.

Well, there is the 4 day week option that would allow 3 days off in the week. Martin suggests a hybrid of working different weeks but I don't see why RM can't plan for posties working a continual 4 day week pattern if they can allow a non-driver to work a standard 5 day Monday to Friday.
However, the 4 day weeks means longer days and I'm assuming that the finish time is still the same as those for the 5 day week?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
