Like everything, how anything is implemented is key and yes, Royal Mail isn't exactly known for managing change.
I know nothing more than anyone else on here, but it seems pretty obvious that if we go from 2nd class every day with a 6 day USO to 2nd class 5 times a fortnight and parcels only on a Saturday, it will take less hours to do so? Taking out less to deliver, in most cases, means it can get done it less time?
Take your office for example, I have no idea if you work a shared van, HCT or single van duty, or whatever else there may be.
Lets take a shared van for instance that currently needs to go 1hr over to complete. If you are delivering all of one duty, all letters, packets etc, but only 1st class letters and packets/specials on the second duty - would you not think that comfortably eats into that 1hr you need to go over? Next time you sort a frame, count how many first class letters there are - there will be a handful.
That's the theory, but in practice it doesn't really save much at all because what you are gaining on the swings (just delivering the tracked items on one round), you lose on the roundabouts (delivering two days worth of mail) which you often most definitely need to be using a trolley. RM already maximised our workloads with the revisions that the Union wasn't involved with and added additional things on top like free collections.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
As you'll know full well the CWU does everything it can to obstruct rank and file committees.
As you know full well the rank and file committees have never done anything and never will achieve anything.
That's not my experience. There was nothing I loved more than a whinging branch secretary moaning because we'd organised ourselves and we're getting our officials to meet us. Anyway Martin's a big boy and doesn't need you throwing your weight around for him.

Just got to say that some office’s and definitely the one I’m in more or less are doing what we all will be doing by next year.
It’s been one delivery of the pairing and tracked off the other one for ages now and the deliveries are so big that it’s not always possible to do that.
Each delivery on average takes about 3.5 hours between 2 so on average 7 hours outdoors between 2 if you did all of it.
Most days we get out and have about 4-4.5 hours to do however much we do.
All the assumed changes will do is is make sure that every single day will have a heavy workload and higher call rate.
I’ve been in more than one office and in in my honest opinion, some of you are in for a massive shock and some of you not so much.
Only in year 1 with mail dropping by nearly 10% each year then the workload will soon drop. I can see the changes leading to massive job losses, after all the only way to save £300m is by paying out less wages!!
When they say mails dropped, mail may have dropped for RM, not for the posties, they’ve just made the walks longer to compensate, I’ve never worked so hard

I have not noticed a drop in mail in my time at RM. If anything it feels like mail has gone up...
but I think they only talked about 'addressed mail' in that recent announcement about the xmas period. It's not surprising that's going down as that's basically just xmas cards and birthday cards.
Is addressed mail not just all mail that isnt Door To Doors?

Going by the CWU video tonight, it looks like walking duties will be Mon-Fri every week (wait until you see the stampede for them!)
Driving duties will be offered the chance of a 4 day driving week (Wed-Saturday) followed by a 5 day walking duty the next week, giving a 9 day fortnight. Kind of what I thought it might end up like - if you want every weekend off, you will be walking miles to get it, but as a sweetener for having to work every second Saturday, you get an extra day off per fortnight. I'm torn with what I'd do given the option. Every Saturday off would be great, but so would a 4 day week consisting of driving only. Wouldn't fancy being the person who has to staff an office with shifts overlapping like that.

What happens to the Tracked/1c on Mondays and Tuesdays if the driving duties are all only Wed to Sat?
If "walking" days are all going to be 30/40 mins longer each day then that's even later finishes than we have at present.

When I read the Q3 report they released they talked about 'addressed letters' being down X%, for some reason in my head I categorised that as written letters like hand written cards, but it probably means all letters - yes....
But I don't understand why they call letters 'addressed letters' and not just 'letters'. I am not sure I have ever delivered a letter without an address on it.
If all letters were dropping ~7% year after year for years then by now we'd be almost down to absolutely nothing. I cannot see this trend when coming into work for the past 6 years. As I say - it actually feels like letter volume has gone up.

I quite like the rolling day off setup that we currently have in place. Doing 5 days straight is a drag and in a physical job like this isn't ideal, so this potential new setup is not great IMO, though I understand a lot of people will be glad to have a 2 day weekend.
For me it will be better doing 5 days walking then 4 days driving.
Probably also better to stay part time as the 4 days will be longer days. For full timers that will mean doing a 9 hour 25 minute day. That's surely going to be a 'late' finish and a long ruddy day. It puts me off going FT now - I think I'll stick to my short PT days.
How do others feel about walking for 5 days straight each week? and how do full timers feel about working a 9 hour 25 minute day on the 4 day weeks? For new starts on the 40 hour contracts that's a 10 hour day!

A lot of people already do 6 days straight when working their day off or those that dont do 5 days straight in the week before and after their long weekends so I dont think it'd cause much of an uproar but everyone has different levels of fitness/age etc

Reading the above posts don't forget to bear in mind on the 'walking' week obviously it won't be the same duty each day it'll be alternating and it's delivering everything for the duty, the other thing is it'll be triple mail every Mon and Tues on alternating duties as the previous full delivery for them would have been thurs/Fri the previous week, and only double for weds-fri though, it was said previously they'd redo the duties to make them smaller to accommodate this but who knows as that would presumably create loads of jobs which of course isn't the plan.
