We are pleased to announce more details regarding the CWU agreement announced with Royal Mail before Christmas regarding the fact that up to 11-thousand-part timers will get the opportunity to increase their contracted hours on legacy terms and conditions up to and including full time hours.

  • 300 Part timers who are on 35 hours who are working over these hours will get the opportunity to accept a 37-hour contract on a permanent basis.

Martin Walsh
Deputy General Secretary Postal
I have edited this post to highlight the paragraph which states "Part timers who are on 35 hours.... "
This appears to contradict the following;

Royal Mail & CWU Joint Communication

Several questions have been raised recently in relation to the introduction of the Shorter Working Week, the reduction to 38hrs and the new 35hr full time contracts. As a result meetings have taken place between Royal Mail & CWU to provide joint clarification to the issues that have been raised. The purpose of this joint document is to provide clarity on the most frequently asked questions:

1. With effect from 1st October 2018, 35hrs is the contract we will use for all future full time OPG contracts (whether they be new recruits or part time uplifts from existing employees).

2. Employees on the new 35hr contracts will be listed on PSP as full-time employees but using a different position code to that used for our full-time employees on 38hr contracts.
end.
My point being they are already classed as full time.
Going from part time to full time will be done in seniority order
Like it’s always been done
And some PTimers won’t want to go FT
And non drivers can’t

The CWU have sold out seniority. Many of us have been waiting years to go full time. What's the reference period for the hours that we've worked? The CWU is a disgrace. Martin Walsh wouldn't have put up with this when he had a proper job. f**k that CWU off, stop giving these traitors your money.

In practice every office will class a different number of hours as full time. Locally it's 37 hours with anything less being classed as part time.

Going from part time to full time will be done in seniority order
Where does it say this is being done on seniority? It isn't.

We have part timers who have done 18/20 years, but have stayed part time to stay on their nice area paired up FT/PT best walks in the office, but in theory end up doing full time hours with early starts on O/T, where would they stand?

Good point. They have pulled the revisions and re-pick so any part-timer who has only worked for the business for just a few years could potentially get full-time work over someone who has been part-time for years. Maybe some posties don't want to be full-time - but with a full revision and re-pick they would always get the first choice. Seniority has always been the logical and fair way of allocating duties in the business.

By putting the cart before the horse they could get a lot of issues in the future.

We'll have to get a List of Different Contract definitons. :hmmmm There's people talking about ''Old Guard'.. Old PT .. New PT ... New New Contracts ... all very confusing.

ANY improvements have got to be Good News. However those that are Old enough will remember when RM did away with loads of different payrates and payments, claiming it would simplify things. :left:

As to wether the right people will get the right improved contracts.... I guess you've got to hope your Unit Rep's got some Balls and will not let your Manager simply make up all his Brown Nosing Buddies. :speak to the hand We live in hope. :cuppa

That is if they've even got a unit rep. The last time the list of every rep in the area covered by our MC was put up on our union board, less than 1/4 of the DOs had a rep.

The “new new contract” isn’t a thing it was just a point I was making that if RM changed the terms of new entrants AGAIN for the worse you wouldn’t have the “new contract” employees battering down the door saying it’s not right they have it better than those incoming

Very True SP. But whose fault is that? It's in many people's nature to MOAN about everything but to not actually DO ANYTHING about it. I'm sure many DOs have a Very Vocal Individual who you would think would make an ideal IR Rep, but they'd rather just MOAN about everything. :speak to the hand

In fact the Biggest Gobsites in my DO were all Strike Breakers, are the Brown Nosers, and just happen to have some of the Cushiest Duties in the Office. But you can bet your bottom dollar when THEY get some problem with THEIR Leave, or Pay, they're straight round to the Rep to sort it out! : :funneh

Every workplace has them and they're not going to go away .... Unless of course the Union wins a Really Attractive VR Package for THEM! :cuppa

I know it isn't real AD, (although I've heard some called that).

I wasn't having a go just saying how bloody confusing it is to try and sort out all these different contracts, and pay scales. :cuppa

We had strike breakers at our DO last time but they did their hours at the local MC instead of the DO as we were on the picket line. They got found out through the grapevine though and nobody speaks to them now. Must be a pretty miserable existence day in day out for a few extra quid at the time

Quite Funny at ours. The Strike Breakers were quite happy to work at our DO because they basically didn't have any work to do, and were getting paid to do nothing. Then later on when they were told they might have to help out at other DOs they suddenly got Very Militant and said, ''If we have to work at another Office we'll be supporting the Strike''! :left:

Up to 11-thousand-part timers will get the opportunity to increase their contracted hours on legacy terms and conditions up to and including full time hours.

We have been working with Royal Mail to ensure that all 11-thousand-part timers will get the opportunity to accept the increase in their contracted hours before 31st January 2025. The reference point is that the hours had to be worked up to 1st January 2025.
Anyone know what they mean by "The reference point is that the hours had to be worked up to 1st January 2025." ?

It says ALL part timers will have the opportunity to increase hours. Does 11,000 sound about right for total legacy PT numbers? I'd guess our office has only a max of 5% PT legacy workers now. 95% being FT. So the 11,000 number suggests that every PT has the opportunity to move up. Which would mean seniority is irrelevant as all PT will get the chance.
• 8400 Part timers will get the opportunity to accept a full-time role on a permanent basis.

• 1700 Part timers will get the opportunity to accept an increase their contracted hours on a permanent basis.
I don't understand these specifics. Why are 1700 PT separate from the other 8400? Is this simply saying that 1,700 PTs will get to move up to say 35 hours instead of 37, whereas 8400 PTs will get to go to 37 hours?

If they are having their cake and eating it at your DO then you failed. At least at my DO the strike breakers who took the meagre new T&C's and pay rise whilst still earning, when their colleagues lost out through strike action are still ultimately shunned to this day :thumbup

How many walks at your DO Norris? 95% 37 hour FT contracts sounds ludicrous unless you have about 8 duties. My DO started phasing out FT duties 15 years ago
