Royal Mail reveals amount of items delivered on busiest day

Royal Mail has revealed how many items were delivered in Oxfordshire on the busiest day this week as MPs slam "repeated delays".

This comes following the news that the government has approved Royal Mail’s takeover by billionaire Daniel Kretinsky.

Last week, Ofcom fined Royal Mail £10.5m for missing delivery targets for first and second class mail.

Ofcom’s fine is almost double last year’s, which comes as more than a quarter of all first-class mail arrived late in the year to March 2024.

In light of this, Oxfordshire’s Lib Dem MPs have called out “blatant mismanagement” for causing "repeated delays" in postal delivery across the area, calling for the new owner to put "services for communities first".

In response to this, a spokesperson for Royal Mail said "everyone is working incredibly hard to ensure presents and cards arrive in time for Christmas", including at the delivery offices across Oxfordshire.

They added: “We delivered 35 million letters and nine million parcels on our busiest day this week.

"Last year more than 99 per cent of items posted before the last posting dates arrived before Christmas and we are well prepared to deliver this again this year.”

But Oxfordshire’s Lib Dem MPs believe "people across our community are being badly let down - from NHS patients waiting for appointments to families sending Christmas cards and presents".

They have called on the new ownership to “work day and night” to turn the situation in Oxfordshire around.

In a collective statement, Lib Dem MPs Layla Moran, Freddie van Mierlo, Charlie Maynard, Calum Miller and Olly Glover said: “Thousands of us across Oxfordshire depend on Royal Mail services every single day.

"It’s clear that, despite the incredible work of our posties and sorting office staff, people across our community are being badly let down - from NHS patients waiting for appointments to families sending Christmas cards and presents.

“It’s extremely disappointing that Royal Mail has been found in breach of its delivery targets.

"It’s even more concerning that this British institution may not remain permanently based in the UK, and that the watering down of services is still on the table.

“Royal Mail’s incoming owner and management must work day and night to turn things around for communities like ours so that people get the service they deserve.

"We’ll be following this situation very closely.

"Ministers and Royal Mail executives must be held to account so that local communities come first.”

Royal Mail said earlier this year it met with NHS bodies and NHS Trusts across the country and patient groups and that it now has a process in place to ensure the timely delivery of medical letters.

It added that it tracks deliveries internally every day, and for this reason, it knows that "nearly all are delivered on time".
