Having been there in the past, the main "selling point" of voluntary redundancy is that it will be far better terms than compulsory redundancy. As the wording implies, voluntary is for people who want to go while compulsory you have almost no say in it. It is quite likely that compulsory redundancy would be at the legal minimum.

If VR happens I think they’ll rush it through before the end of the financial year.

If you still have a good few years of working life before pension age, I would think long and hard about leaving without first scoping out the job market. There aren’t that many jobs out there.

I think the CWU said it was likely only a couple or few thousand that would be getting VR. I am surprised that anyone gets VR. I'd make a guess that 2000-3000 posties leave this company every 2 or 3 months, so why pay people off.

In today's CWU Live Dave Ward said there are 20,000 posties on the new terms and conditions (lower pay). When was that contract introduced? - 2 years ago? How many posties are there in the UK - 100,000?, so the attrition rate of posties at Royal Mail is 10% per year?, meaning around 833 posties leave RM each month....

So why would Royal Mail payout absolute millions in VR when the attrition rate is so high? Seems dumb.

Wanting out and actually accepting a redundancy package are 2 very different things.
It would also be interesting to see where they apply these redundancies, as I imagine offices with the worst new attendance patterns and times will have already lost far more % of staff than those who have better last letter times/wallington weeks etc.

Any money they spend paying off legacy contracted employees they will get back by replacing them with new lesser term contracted employees

Because not all employees are on equal contracts. I imagine a large percentage of those leaving are pretty recent entrants into the business if our office is anything to go by. They have compulsory Sunday working, require driving licenses, get moved to different offices, PT hours, monthly pay and maybe 4 weeks annual leave? Not sure whether they have paid breaks either.

If you've been there a while you get benefits such as...

6 Weeks paid Annual Leave
Based in one office
Weekly pay
Legacy allowances in some cases
Doesn't matter if you haven't got a driving license
Guaranteed FT hours

Those are the people RM want out - VR means they can tempt them. I'll stick it out without a payoff.....but a payoff tempts me to leave.

I think you have to be working at RM for 20yrs before you get 6 weeks annual leave.

If you watch the CWU LIVE from today...it's on Youtube....

Dave Ward has said they have an agreement with Kretinsky to level up those on the new contracts to the same as legacy contracts.

DW said terms will be "equalised via a career path" not that terms would be simply levelled up, I've no idea what he means about career path but it could well be what was suggested previously, after 5 years terms are equal but how many new starters will survive for that long when the turnover is around 50% p.a.??

DAVE WARD: 'We have an agreement to end the two tier arrangement and to equalise pay and terms and conditions through the introduction of a new career path'.

feel free to speculate on what he means by career path... A gradual increase in hourly pay through the first year of service?

Any deal for me to leave would have to be based on the old 104 weeks VR payment to tempt me, 9 months VR doesn't cut it for me

I’d love to be proven wrong but there’s about as much chance of two years VR payment returning as there is the Saturday premium.
