Post Office scandal trials must not be rushed

Nobody will face trial in relation to the Horizon post office scandal until the present public inquiry is completed.

While this may be frustrating for those who have seen their lives destroyed in this dreadful miscarriage of justice, it is entirely the right decision.

The recent ITV drama performed a great service in highlighting the plight of the hundreds of post office workers who were wrongly convicted of crimes they never committed. But it has also created a febrile atmosphere where people are, understandably, looking for somebody to carry the can.

Given the severity of the injustice, it is morally imperative that anyone who has acted dishonestly is brought to book. But this will require cool heads and an objective analysis of the evidence. There must be no clamour for revenge.

The post office scandal is a stain on our judicial system. But avenging one injustice with another is no justice at all.
