Use of personal mobile phones

Post by Atanarjuat »

I am surprised at number of people in the delivery office who refuse to use their personal phones for work-related matters.

I'm not referring to not calling customers who have left stickies saying “bell not working - ring xxx”. I don’t use my phone to call those either.

Rather, those who will not share their numbers with colleagues, including drivers, who may need to contact them for bag drops/customer collections etc.

Why make life difficult? Why not show a bit of flexibility? Surely this is not helpful to anyone?

We were told that there should not be two people driving round delivering parcels while on van share. Nothing worse than driving round delivering parcels only to get a call asking where are u? Not going to get the job done any quicker imho

Why not provide the tools to do the job? If managers get a work mobile phone, why not staff 'who may need...' them? By the way there's a phone capability on the PDA but most managers don't know or can't be bothered to get them set up with their numbers. RM prob won't pay for enabling phone calls to other numbers than RAC etc. in case of misuse.

Yeah don't see why we can't use our PDAs.

All they have to do to avoid missuse is create a menu of fellow posties in your office who are currently logged in, and enable calls between them.

Shouldn't be difficult for tech people.

Dual SIM card phones are widely available, if you need to give your managers your number.

From experience I've found that some people don't have a life and want to message you about work outside of work hours 😡

Next thing you know you get an invite to join their little WhatsApp group 😩

I suppose it’s a case of each to their own. Personally I have no issue with using my personal phone for work-related purposes, but I do draw the line at WhatsApp and other IM apps.

To each their own I suppose is the answer. Although TBH I doubt anyone here is accessing this forum on their PDA or work phone …

I mean - we are all just trying to do the best job we can and/or get the most out of the job. If that means using my personal phone, I have no issue with it.

Drivers don't need people ringing them whilst they're trying to work. It's also a disciplinary offence to make or receive calls whilst driving. It is also a disciplinary offence to continue with a call whilst someone is driving. Simply agree what you're doing with the other person. If you have to wait, you wait. If they have to wait, they wait. Do the job properly.
