How many of you actually do a proper van check each day ?

I've been shocked at the amount of times I've had to take a duty holders van only to find things like below legal tyre tread, 10 psi in 60psi tyres, split wiper blades, etc etc.

Floaters at our place definitely don’t and I’ve seen guys at our place do check in canteen!!

Been here 3mths, as a floater every one I've been with def does not check anything, don't think there is time to do it anyhow, they want us out the yard and delivering asap

This has been a problem recently. The agenda right now is getting everyone out the door on time. Do not feel bullied or pressurised by management telling you that your should of left at a certain time as a vehicle check comes priority over getting out on time.

It takes approximately 6 mins for a daily vehicle check and 15 mins for a weekly one (Tuesday).

Yep everyday we have a sign up at what time we are meant to be out, if you arnt out by then you get the "come on hurry up" or "you should be out by now" remarks

All the new starts, myself included at my DO are beeping their horns in the yard.
The old guard have already given the van a cursory glance and left the yard.

I've had a hire van since I started...that someone put a nice big scrape down before I got it so I log it daily as damage and need a manager sign off.

Every day without fail, the 600s we drive are absolutely shot to bits.
NOT taking out something with bald tyres, no oil in it & an Engine Management light on.
A million Km on ours is the norm now!

The problem with our vans is that there are rarely any spares one's in the yard as they have usually all been allocated and given to both posties, for example, who are on a van share. So when someone reports a faulty van it usually means that work won't be going out as they will either need to wait for a van or pick up another one elsewhere. There are many times that I have reported a faulty van only to be told, well can't you just take it out with you? Are these managers encouraging us to break the law! I assume that if RM now want to start drug and alcohol testing us that this is most definitely not the case.

If you use the same van day in, day out, then you should, hopefully, know if the horn works or not? You wouldn't get in your own car and beep the phone once a week to make sure it was still working.

Most of the issues with the knackered old vans aren't illegal, if they are there's no way anybody should drive a van with illegal tyres etc as if they do it's their job/license on the line if they have an accident or get pulled over by the police for a roadside check etc.

It is more than just faulty tyres and I have encountered faults like a brake light or an indicator light being out. It is illegal to drive with these lights out and while the police may pull you over and be lenient and give you a verbal warning and a Roadside Prohibition Notice to get the problem fixed, if you're unlucky you might end up receiving a fine and three points on your licence.

If you use the same van day in, day out, then you should, hopefully, know if the horn works or not? You wouldn't get in your own car and beep the phone once a week to make sure it was still working.

The horn is part of the daily check and out of all the checks it must be the easiest one to do *beep*

Check the tyres, oil on Tuesday, check all lights and horn, faff with the wipers and blowers. Takes 2/3 minutes and you'll probably be on camera checking! There's no point not doing it! Although when I get my collections van on Monday, it's never signed for on the Saturday even though it's been used (agency).

They should all at least check the bloody tyres aren't bald or flat, or they're idiots. It's the only thing you can't say 'it must've broke while I was out there'. Our office had issues with people driving on exposed wire and everyone who signed for the effected van within the last few days/weeks was in BIG trouble as it was clear they hadn't checked it.
