New 70-hour week contracts

The union rep at my DO mentioned a new peak season contract which is being offered from next week and only to those who joined in the last year.

Apparently the deal is 7 x 10-hour days one week and the subsequent week off. The hours are from 1000 - 2000 and as such may attract an extra £30 or so per day due to evening work. All else remain the same i.e. same hourly rate as in existing contract.

Anyone else aware of this and have further insight? TIA

That'd be 35 hours a week anyway, so no real gain, and your performance and risk of causing an accident would rocket as the week went on from tiredness, as well as brushing up against the limits we can drive or be on duty.

I wouldn't be surprised, but I've no reason to believe it until I see it.

Sounds like hell. Working half your shift in the dark. Bet they’d be calling on the week off to see if you can come in and help clear too.

Exactly what I was going to say. I wouldn't be surprised if your manager rings you up on your week off so you might be quids in. That could involve delivering parcels or the mail on duties that might have built up.

Sounds awful. 10 hour days doing a physical job in the dark for 7 days straight.

no corroborated source and apart from the Rep and OP being in DO, no suggestion it's an outdoor delivery job. Could be in processing.

Depending on the type of work, it could be appealing to somebody, having that week off.

Can't see it being in processing. Wouldn't work when integrated into existing shift patterns/the workplan. Shifts in MCs are around 7hrs long and are designed around dispatch times. There's a few 10hr shifts but you can't have that many as there wouldn't be the workload available as you'd have times when you'd have two shifts worth of staff in.

Did they explain how this would work when you allow for the 50 minute break that a 10 hour shift at RM is supposed to have? That would have to make the hours 1000-2050 with newbie's breaks being unpaid. Sounds like its either bullsh!t or someone at RM hasn't thought it through, or more likely a mix of both.

MR/breaks could be included as per schedule you've included. Obvious question (amongst many others) is if it's a 70 hour contract then that's paid hours rather than attendance and therefore breaks are paid, as they are now for most of us. The hours you 'work' in a day would be 9hrs 10mins.

Well you got that bit wrong - all new starters since November 2022 have NOT been paid for their break. And the OP states it is only for those who have joined in the last year or so.

Therefore a 10 hour shift as quoted above would only be paid for 9 hours 10 minutes and that would be all they are paid for. RM contracts only pay the hours you work, they no longer pay the time you are on a break. Hope that that is simple enough for you to understand

simple enough... but X hours in any contract of employment usually refers to paid hours. So the devil is in the detail (I did say it's an obvious question to clarify) and the OP has done a runner, we're on the cusp of Peak and no sign of this supposed new contract.

Strangely enough the OP registered on this forum just after the new contracts started, and has then waited almost two years before posting.

Possibly just a rumour or someone 'testing the water' for reactions. Back in about 2018 the part timers at my old DO received a letter from an area manager offering a full time contract but it had to include 8 hours on a Sunday (at the Sunday premium rate). The letter itself looked like a 7 year old had written it, no one in the DO was interested and it was never mentioned again.
