An avid gamer was distraught to discover the Royal Mail had been to his house to deliver his brand new £270 Nintendo Switch but ended up leaving it in a 'safe space' outside



A gaming enthusiast was left seething after his £270 Nintendo Switch parcel was abandoned in the rain.

Tom Newborn had been eagerly anticipating his return home from work to play on his new console and game, which he had pre-ordered months in advance.

He was taken aback when he discovered the package completely drenched. Upon lifting the sodden cardboard box, he spotted a tear on the side, revealing that the inner box was also damaged.

Tom had splashed out on a brand new limited edition Legend of Zelda Nintendo Switch, arranging for it to be delivered on the day of release. The 29 year old alleges that the console is water-damaged and unusable.

However, his hometown of Redditch, Worcestershire, had been issued with a severe weather warning for heavy rain and potential flooding. Bearing this in mind, Tom anticipated finding his parcel at a neighbour's house or returned to the sorting office.

Yet, the delivery note from Royal Mail indicated it had been left in a customer-specified safe space. This was behind his bin, but he insists he did not select this location for it to be left.

According to Tom, the spot where the parcel was left does not meet Royal Mail's safe space standards as they 'must be secure and dry'. The parcel was delivered last Friday (27 Sept), with the console being ruined by rain and the actual game missing from the delivery.

The disgruntled gamer has since lodged a complaint with Royal Mail but is still awaiting a response.

The digital marketing manager shared with What's The Jam: "I collect and play video games."

"As a massive Legend of Zelda fan, I pre-ordered the bundle and was buzzing to get stuck into the game after work."

"I had a sinking feeling when I went to pick up the parcel after seeing the delivery note, especially as the weather had been horrendous with local flood warnings due to heavy rain."

"When I picked up the drenched box, I noticed a tear on the side and saw that the items inside were also soaked. My heart dropped and I was gutted."

o but it’s a bit stupid to have left it behind the bin with the forecast. I presume it needed a signature if it was that valuable so postie could be in big trouble here, that’s why you shouldn’t cut corners just to get done quicker we are just a number do it at your pace and properly because management don’t give a toss about us

True, I've done it plenty times, either behind bins or over the back gate, but never with signed stuff.. I need to get out of the habit, it's due to been rushed, esp when your on a partnered loop, it makes you rush about and cut corners more

There was a recent briefing about never leaving parcels in blue bins. Therefore this f**k up can be blamed on that briefing. As, if it was in the bin it would be dry!

The push for first time delivery is a numbers game. For every one of these incidents nine parcels left in similar circumstances don't generate a complaint. All the couriers rampantly doorstep items and play by that rule, yet so long as things are going great everyone turns a blind eye to how the percentages could possibly be that high. RM is competing with them when it comes to large retailer contracts and cajoles people through My Performance into fulfulling those fantasy numbers.

For the record, I think both were in the wrong. The recipient for a 'it'll get here by magic' attitude to a high value order and the delivery officer for doorstepping it. It was drummed into me when I started to never doorstep items, but then we only had a single sack of packets to shift back then. Someone please invent a time machine!

If ‘behind the bin’ was the allocated safe place indicated by the customer on the pda or on the parcel, then ‘Tom’ can’t claim anything from RM.

It doesn’t matter if it is a try on or not if the postie has left a parcel out in the rain, even if it is an allotted safe place, the fault lies with them. There is no excusing such a dumb decision as this.

There is an excuse of sorts as the company now is continually trying to encourage posties to deliver every tracked item first time, they are even giving out prizes for posties who bring zero parcels back each week/month, you can virtually guarantee they are not all being delivered in accordance with RM's safeplace policy.

oh i can imagine it will probably be one who's never In, ordering stuff constantly and been fine with the"behind the bin" every time. no doubt trying it on with the nonsense spouted and attention seeking drama...I mean, so desperate to see his precious nerd box he wasn't even home for it, absolute chancer. Quite simple for the posty trying to do the favour. No favours going forward again, go pick it up yourself. End of. No drama

If the customer is not in and there is no safe place designated then it's better just to slip the parcel and redeliver it the next day. Like someone said it's a numbers game and you will get caught out eventually if you are just dumping parcels without a second thought.

For those that must "safeplace" everything all the time...

With the year moving into more and more bad weather why not... nip down to your local cheap shop/supermarket (B&M, Home Bargains, Pound- [add word here], etc.) and buy a roll of two of the cheapest bin bags going. Honestly it must be a quid or two for loads of them. Really no great outlay for the piece of mind.

Then, when you're on a parcel duty and it's royally p*ssing it down (or snowing - we'll quickly get there too) just have a few crunched up bin bags in your storm jacket pocket. Pop the parcel in a bag and pop it where you like and it's protected and hidden. For the fractional cost you're happy to be rid and the darned parcel, the customer is happy (and thinks you have gone the extra mile), and you can keep on clearing those parcels.



P.S. If you're a complete Ebenezer Scrooge when it comes to buying anything for work - ignore this post entirely! Just save the quid, 739 the parcel, and take it back the next day where they won't be in again.
