These open days where RM recruit dozens of posties on inferior contracts suggests that it may only be a matter of time before the business intends to give those on existing legacy contracts a stark choice - either sign the new inferior contract or there's the door.

The Union knows full well what is going on under their noses and there are now over 17,000 new entrants who have joined the company since the 1st December 2022. But what is the CWU actually doing about it? It's been nearly two years. How many of these new starters have actually joined the CWU on the reduced union subscription and at what state does the company need to be in to afford to give them decent contracts? The actual deal that was agreed was incredibly vague about this. How much profit does the business need to make first? These are all questions that I would want answers to instead of continual bluff and blunder about how those who are running the business have turned their backs on their workforce.

Enough to absord the cost of upgrading contracts and still post a large net profit. The problem is no profit is big enough - look at Samsung apologising to shareholders for only making $6.8b last quarter. If RM was going to make a profit without tampering with contracts it would have done it by now, but labour costs are 70% of expenditure in this operation so if the company returns to profitability it will no doubt be borne from worse terms and conditions.

Assuming a return to profitability, I very much doubt the CEO is going to explain to shareholders that £200m profit 2025/26 had to tumble to 'only' £100m 2026/27 because we had to bring the new starts onto the old contracts. Degredation of all contracts is far more likely if profitability is demonstrated by poorer T&Cs.

And these open days are a sign of absolute desperation. They're literally having people walk in off the street.
The machine stops.

That quote from Mr Rush made me laugh.

What's the next move, go to the local 'spoons and round a few day time drinkers up with the promise of a couple of pints and a packet of amber leaf in return for doing a few loops :chuckle

I would agree with your Marxist theory that capitalists seek the ever greater accumulation and expansion of profit extracted by the working class. The sad thing is that if 20,000 new starts were paid another £50 a week then that's an extra million pounds the business would need to pay in wages per week; so in a year that's £52 million. Let's put that into context with what RM were offering as part of the Xmas bonus last year (its best Xmas ever in 4 years) which would have been £500 x 150,000 staff = £75 million. Regardless of the fact that some people will say that the company never planned to give us the full bonus - it suggests that there was already money in the pot or willing to be spent on the workforce.

What has happened to this money? Is Martin Seidenberg really worth twice as much as what he earned last year? Do we really need multiple CEOs on big money? Nobody ever seems to be able to hold IDS to account over their real finances. Top executives seem to get rewarded for failure in the UK and it surely puts OfCom's £5.6 million fine in the shade when RM can afford to up just one man's pay - Seidenberg's to over £3 million. According to the narrative, the amount that Seidenberg is in line for depends on IDS meeting targets on certain measures including operating profits and cashflow - so profits are indeed up then? The fact is that IDS makes absolutely shedloads of revenue with actual revenues up again at 12.68 billion. Those running the business pretending that they have diddly squat suggesting that they are losing a million quid a day when they have literally billions in retained earnings! Maybe it will change if we only have one owner and majority shareholder though no one is quite sure whether he will he take all the profits for himself and run if the USO is not officially defunct.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

They could certainly learn from what Press Gangs used to do by getting men into Royal Navy warships in the 1800s. Instead of seizing a man and offering them a Kings shilling as a reward for volunteering they used to drop it into their drinks and then claim that if you were in possession of the shilling then that was good enough for you to join. It's why glass bottomed tankards become popular, so that you could check your drink didn't contain a shilling before drinking it.

In which case the company is missing out on an untapped source of labour by making driving a requirement. Used to see some colleagues looking rough on a Saturday morning back when we were out on foot.

Since this time last year, we've had at least 15 new starters. We have 4 left and 1 transferred out. Average staying power is between 1-2 months. This is before you count the other "oldies" who have left or retired. Office is a smaller one of 40ish. :cuppa
