They'll recruit 16,000 new staff ahead of the busy Christmas season.

Royal Mail is to recruit 16,000 temporary workers to help with the busy festive season.

The temporary positions will be located in two parcel hubs, five seasonal parcel sort centres, and 37 mail centres across the country, with a variety of shifts available.

Delivery and collection jobs will also be available in local delivery offices across the country.

The company's two parcel hubs, based in Daventry and Warrington, will be hiring more than 2,000 additional staff as they expect 1.7 million parcels a day to be processed across both sites.

Extra temporary space equivalent to 20 football pitches has been created across the five seasonal parcel sort centres located in Atherstone, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Daventry and Greenford in London.

The temporary recruits will help sort the growing number of online shopping orders expected before they are taken to Royal Mail's 1,200 delivery offices.

Contracts will run from late October to early January 2025, covering big shopping events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Parcelforce Worldwide is also recruiting additional drivers and indoor workers.

Almost 4,000 new vans, trucks and trailers are being added to Royal Mail's fleet in time for Christmas.

Alistair Cochrane, Royal Mail's chief operating officer, said: "Every year we pull out all the stops to deliver Christmas for our customers.

"It's our busiest time of year and we plan all year round to help ensure we deliver the best possible service for UK consumers and businesses.

"We are continuing to make a substantial commitment in additional resources including the recruitment of thousands of temporary workers to handle the festive mailbag and the growing market of online Christmas shopping."

Don't they do this every year but we're still vastly under staffed? I'd say personally our DO has never been worse than it is now, staffing wise, so god knows what it'll be like when the Christmas rush starts.

Yeah they do, they big up taking on loads of staff in the mail centres, parcel hubs, whatever, but generally not at delivery offices, however we've got a few new starters which would be great if they weren't f***ing useless so in theory we'd do loads better this year but in practice I'm not holding my breath.

Boils my piss!!!!!! Every year we hear this. Yeah great you effing Wombles!!!!! Why the hell can’t they grasp the fact that if you need 16,000 extra staff in Mail Centres then it’s obvious that delivery need help. But oh no let’s cut back some more on the poor bastards who actually do all the work and grind them further into the ground.

Delivery will probably get to hear the usual crap in the coming weeks that there isn’t any money for extra vans and that the DOMs need to pull the overtime in as they’re spending too much!!!!! Absolute joke!!!!!

16,000 extra staff is all we’ll hear from the media in the coming weeks & RM will dress it up as some massive accomplishment they’ve achieved by recruiting these people who’s sum total of work for 6 weeks will be to push a York from A to B.

The RM person says they pull out all the stops to deliver Christmas every year. RM don't pull out any stops to deliver mail any time of the year. They wouldn't keep getting ofcom fines if they did.

Deliveries do get casuals as well as MCs. The DO that covers where I live seems to have casuals every year

They seem to have a new approach this year, we've recently got a few more new starters than we actually need, we've currently got no one off sick and there's too many staff, the newbies are being sent out with the duty holders on singleton duties to get them trained, apparently they're going to be put on the lapsed duties for December, I'm a bit cynical and I wonder what will happen after Christmas (I refuse to call it peak) when we simply won't need them, it would be a twats trick to just let them go as no longer required when they thought they'd been taken on in proper jobs.

Some people have all the luck.
My main 7.5 tonne has got 750,000km on it, it’s not even close to being the highest mileage we got.
They are knackered!
