Why is it frowned upon to Work Day Off/Early IPS Sorting in Royal Mail ???

I don't believe it's frowned upon.... it's probably more that people think about themselves working their day off or coming in early and it's not for them whatsoever. They hate the idea.

The job is physical and doing 5 days is too much for some, the thought of working 6 days is hell for some people.

Managers also treat posties like dirt, so by working your day off and coming in early - you are helping bullies out. The thought of helping these managers get their bonuses whilst we get zero in bonuses is too much for some posties.

Posties probably don't dislike you for doing extra work, they simply couldn't do it themselves. I am sure they understand other people need extra money.

The only thing that annoyed me about people working their days off was when they insisted on being on their own rounds. I was on a 4 days a week day off cover round, in any year I only got on the actual rounds about 25% of the time. One round that I was meant to cover once every week, I only got on it twice one year, 2 out of a possible 46.

There’s 24 hours in a day and we are contracted to work anything from 6-8 hours of that day (give or take & depending on employment status). I couldn’t give a flying F..k if someone wants to work the remaining 16 hours of that day, every day, 7 days a week. What the F..k is this strange obsessional behaviour worrying what someone else is or isn’t doing? It’s very weird & is something that has really crept in over the last couple of years. I do wonder if those of you who are so bothered by what your colleagues are doing are like it out of work. Do you constantly watch what your neighbours are doing and then slag them off cos it doesn’t fit with your ideals.

There’s a staggering amount of people in RM who simply can’t concentrate in doing their own job.

complain that the office hasn't got enough staff or that they don't have time to take their break because
the walk is to big etc., then I do respond that the management will never do anything about it if people are
willing to cover the work on those vacancies at a cheaper rate (for those working for more than 37h on the 'old contracts').

How is anyone still ghosting annual leave? That was supposed to be suppressed once and for all after the 2007 dispute!

I doubt they'd do anything if nobody worked their day's off, it would just mean more staff return after their day off to two days mail.

Our floater positions have been unfilled since Covid and they no longer advertise them as a position.

I don’t have a day off cover. Thought this was the norm now? The business is too short staffed to be that organised.

Again , depends on the DO. We’ve got rotas at ours, even on the single duties.

I'm fortunate that I don't need to rely on overtime and I've no problem with staff working their days off or coming in early on IPS. However, when staff need to be incentivised over and above the money to do extra work it often leads to wider issues in the workplace.

I believe many people resent it because it demonstrates the power imbalance between the company and its employees: that it can continue to operate permanently short-staffed and under-resourced because it knows it can depend on many clamouring for the extra work to make ends meet.

You can't blame colleagues in that situation, but then nothing will change. I should say improve, because it did change - it got worse.
