Hello all! How do I go about purchasing consequential loss cover? I went through 2 separate post offices trying to send a Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1 pm with legal documents. I kept repeating that I needed "consequential loss cover" and that it is separate from normal cover but at the 1st post office they kept saying they hadn't heard of such and at the 2nd they told me it's the same thing as normal cover. In the end, I ended up getting just normal cover upon their advice as I could not find anyone who would be able to confirm I was getting "consequential loss cover". Is anyone able to clarify this? Has there been changes and is there now just 1 cover for everything? At the same time, both post office and royal mail websites seem to suggest these are not the same. Thanks for your help.

Consequential loss cover does exist and is separate to the normal cover. When I worked in the Post Office we used to sell it over the counter. Unfortunately, the training of counter clerks in sub-post offices is almost non-existent and when faced with something they have never heard of they often confidently tell you that it doesn’t exist.
CL is the correct type of cover for legal documents. However, it is only worth purchasing if loss or delay would cause provable financial loss: that isn’t always the case.

Hi. Thanks for your answer. Would I be able to verify from the receipt and/or certificate of posting they gave me whether they actually sold me consequential loss cover in the end? Yes, there is a clear substantial (multiples 1000s £) consequential loss directly linked to the delivery I was making. Thanks for your help!

Yes, CL should be clearly stated on the proof of posting and probably listed separately on the cash receipt.
