And to add to the mix, first class stamps go up in price to £1.65 on October 7th.

Re: Second class letter deliveries on Saturdays could be cut
Using the proposed new model a 2c letter sent mid week would do well to arrive by the following mid week.

Re: Second class letter deliveries on Saturdays could be cut
It'll save time as, say, on a Monday, the 2c post will all sit in the frame so no postie will be required to deliver that mail, on Tuesday the postie will then be expected to deliver, Saturday's, Monday's and Tuesday's 2c, so that's Saturday's and Monday's 2c mail not being delivered, so two days posties wages saved.norris9 wrote: ↑05 Sep 2024, 21:13I don't see how this saves any time or at least any significant time. We wouldn't deliver 2nd class mail on Saturday, or possibly alternate days based on whichever source/article you are reading... but on the days we do deliver 2nd class mail we'd have double 2nd class mail. How does this save any time?
Is the aim to push people into sending letters via 1st class delivery, which I'd assume must make the company more money as it's more expensive? and essentially aim to kill off 2nd class mail?
Problem is this has never been trialed at any DO so nobody knows if it'll actually work practice. Delivering 3 days 2c along with one days 1c and Tracked every other Tuesday seems a big ask, even in a DO which clears every days.

With the DTS as 1C drops off more and more, each week the 2C will really build up until an absolute shitload gets released and then you'll probably have a half dozen boxes of mech for each walk one day a weekTopperGas wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 19:57It'll save time as, say, on a Monday, the 2c post will all sit in the frame so no postie will be required to deliver that mail, on Tuesday the postie will then be expected to deliver, Saturday's, Monday's and Tuesday's 2c, so that's Saturday's and Monday's 2c mail not being delivered, so two days posties wages saved.norris9 wrote: ↑05 Sep 2024, 21:13I don't see how this saves any time or at least any significant time. You don't half come out with some nonsense as there's no way the business is going to let 2c regularly build up to that extent, there's no real reason to change the way it's being despatched now, as I assume somebody will still to prep the frames on a daily basis, rather than have to prep 2 or even 3 days mail before you can start your delivery.

If there's very little 1C then that's exactly what will happen with the DTSTopperGas wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 20:42You don't half come out with some nonsense as there's no way the business is going to let 2c regularly build up to that extent, there's no real reason to change the way it's being despatched now, as I assume somebody will still to prep the frames on a daily basis, rather than have to prep 2 or even 3 days mail before you can start your delivery.

Not going to happen. The alternative is that we just send every other days 2C to DOs as manualTopperGas wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 22:18DTS will have to be adapted to reflect the changes in the number of 1c'sSpacePhoenix wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 22:05If there's very little 1C then that's exactly what will happen with the DTSTopperGas wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 20:42You don't half come out with some nonsense as there's no way the business is going to let 2c regularly build up to that extent, there's no real reason to change the way it's being despatched now, as I assume somebody will still to prep the frames on a daily basis, rather than have to prep 2 or even 3 days mail before you can start your delivery.

This is probably more the reality of it rather than some sort of streamlined system that gives duties less calls per day.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 20:01With the DTS as 1C drops off more and more, each week the 2C will really build up until an absolute shitload gets released and then you'll probably have a half dozen boxes of mech for each walk one day a weekTopperGas wrote: ↑06 Sep 2024, 19:57It'll save time as, say, on a Monday, the 2c post will all sit in the frame so no postie will be required to deliver that mail, on Tuesday the postie will then be expected to deliver, Saturday's, Monday's and Tuesday's 2c, so that's Saturday's and Monday's 2c mail not being delivered, so two days posties wages saved.norris9 wrote: ↑05 Sep 2024, 21:13I don't see how this saves any time or at least any significant time. Re: Second class letter deliveries on Saturdays could be cut
This is how the DTS works:
Each day once all outward and DSA has been run by 22:00 the software engine creates a list of every DP in the country that has got a 1C item. It then from that list creates the lists for the individual batches, those lists for the batches get sent off to the CSS machines.
When we run a batch on the first pass each 2C item is checked against the list of DPs due a 1C item. If there is a 1C item for the same DP as the 2C item then that 2C item is released and sequenced. If there's no 1C item for the same DP then that 2C item gets held over to the next day, when it goes through the same process. On the fifth day the 2C item gets automatically released (I believe that any other 2C items for that same DP also get automatically released).
The list of 1C items will be different each day. If the 2C were to only be put through every other day, you'll rapidly get a load build up and then a load will get released when it hits the fifth day.
Realistically it's going to have to be we run the 2C each day and it's going to have to be down to the delivery staff to extract the 2C. It's not really going to be viable to run just the 1C on it's own with the way that 1C is dropping off.

Re: Second class letter deliveries on Saturdays could be cut
Excellent post describing what is and will happen. I've never seen or heard officially of these procedures but you see it in the offices. Houses get nothing for days then they get 4/5 letters. You have lots of gaps in the mail but then houses that have mail have several bits. Although recently as it's always 2/3/4 days mail these things are hard to see!SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑07 Sep 2024, 08:32This is how the DTS works:

As long as it's not expected for each of us to stand in front of an overflowing frame crammed with mail (and untracked packets thrown all over the place) and magically pull just the 1C out and leave the rest depending on the day of the week.

Excellent post explaining the current new system, I thought it was three days maximum the 2c was held but your post has enlightened me as to why some days are heavier then expected. If only the resource to workload tools the COMS use could be linked in too.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑07 Sep 2024, 08:32This is how the DTS works:

Is the 5 day a rolling measure that gets reset when a delivery point gets any sort of delivery eg. packets or parcels too? I regularly get no letters only a parcel for a house yet next day they get a handful of letters?

Re: Second class letter deliveries on Saturdays could be cut
Only mech letters are tied into the DTS system. I'd imagine eventually packets will form part of it, once every MC has got a packet sorting machine. Very few MCs have got flat sorting machines so it'll probably be a very long time before flats get tied into the DTS system.mr hil. wrote: ↑08 Sep 2024, 09:06Excellent post explaining the current new system, I thought it was three days maximum the 2c was held but your post has enlightened me as to why some days are heavier then expected. I'd imagine that COMs must be able to access the Automis system to get the info about what each walk has got. The DTS combined with the CSS generates an absolute shitload of data and reports for the managers.
Sometimes with bulk postings they end up getting most of the mail keep being run until it his the five day limit. Seems to be more common for batches where the DO covers a mainly rural area. Batches seem to be averaging about 20 boxes each atm, some of the batches for DOs covering rural areas can sometimes hit 28-30 boxes. Average is about half of the batch to end up deferred by the DTS, though it can occasionally be 2/3s of the batch
