I am thinking of doing the same thing, I know a part timer in our office went down to 3 days but he works on his own. I think even if you couldn't find anyone else to do it with you they would make it happen somehow though.

No, your contracted hours are all you have to do.
No holiday cover, sickness is required.
Get together with the individual you want to share with, discuss hours & then ask your CWU Rep to draw up an agreement, 2-3 lines are all that’s required.
Confirm with Manager it’s ok.
That simple if your Manager not an idiot!!

We've been told a big point blank no. Isn't it nice how the business has the same rule for all offices

Hey Ed, yes we have this, one person does Mon, Tue, Wed and the second person does Thu, Fri, Sat.

Effectively they are part time, sharing one delivery round.

If you are thinking about the same sort of thing, you would need a compliant colleague.

Has your manager provided a robust reason as to why not?

From memory, I think this could due to the possibility of one person leaving or having a long sick absence etc.

Effectively only half of the week is covered for this delivery round.

Something like this ?

It was done before at my previous office. It would be nice to get away from the constant slog.I would be open to working my partners leave. Also I would expect to share alternate Wallington weeks. Thanks for the replies

Would there need to be a good reason to reject job share?...

If 2 people want to do it and have agreed the days they are happy to work then it should be accepted - right?

What reasons would a manager be able to give to say no? I assume the only good reason would be if recruitment was difficult for that particular office as they'd essentially be losing 1 staff member as 2 people would now be doing 1 person's job.

Because they want to grind down older staff and get people in on the new contract

So long as there's not a recruitment issue (which should only delay things), the only good reasons might be 'structural' to do with office size. In a small office it might not be easily possible to accommodate because the day-off cover would not be needed and there might be nowhere to put them. In larger offices.

I suspect the real reason is that most managers just want everyone working one pattern because they feel that is easiest for them (I'm not saying they are right to think that, merely that it's how they seem to feel).

Two people had agreed to cover one duty by working each week but splitting the duty in half. The reason for not allowing (it came from above apparently) is that Royal Mail don't want job shares. It wasn't made clear why or if it was a countrywide decision.
