That's not really an acceptable excuse perhaps they could do something novel like employing people who can read and match postcodes to the board that tells them where to sort them to.

By eliminating barriers to entry (like basic reading skills) they can collapse the pay floor. Something I read about the eerily familiar state of USPS in America:

[The union rep] said the future of the USPS is to perpetually hire unqualified workers at criminal pay until we either implement the old hiring standards or get shutdown. It was very disheartening, especially when I spoke to our local president and he said that there is 0% chance we ever go back to strict hiring requirements because corporate loves having an infinite hiring pool of disposable, replaceable employees they can grind up and spit out.

Exactly. You will be working the same hours irregardless of whether a revision is carried out or not.

If it's going to be before Xmas it'll be no later than early to mid November

Yeah we have had a November revision a few years back. It was a mess. It involved putting in duties to cover all oversized parcels from town duties and allocated cut-off duties for rural deliveries.
