Re: Manager calling on rest week
If you are a reserve and have 3 weeks off, how would you know your day off on the week you return.
Back in the day a manager would contact you to let you know.
I don't remember anyone mentioning Bullying and Harassment then.

By letter, that's how it was done in the good old days.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 06:23If you are a reserve and have 3 weeks off, how would you know your day off on the week you return.

Re: Manager calling on rest week
The managers have offered to reimburse me the £6 for taking it through the automatic car wash, but as I am saving almost £40 each week in petrol (I have a very juicy BMW!) by using the van for commuting to/from work I haven’t bothered getting the money back. Another postie who also takes his van through the car wash has had no trouble getting his money back from the manager.Basildon Bond wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 05:34Just curious: who pays for the car wash? How does that work?Smoothbackground wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 22:07...We enjoy regular trips through the car wash together, and she is the cleanest Expert of her age in the whole of the RM fleet! Might be unusual where you are, but it’s certainly not unusual in our region.
Long ago now I briefly took it upon myself to clean the inside of a few vans because they were so disgusting - using gloves and holding my breath. By the end of the cleaning: Litter gone; quick vacuum; wipe over the surfaces with anti-bac and then shined up with multi-surface polish from Aldi (less than a quid a can). All at my own expense and out of hours (about 30 minutes a van). However, I noticed that when I looked inside the same vans after a week (when I hadn't been using them) they where again horrible inside so I gave up. I must be mad to try.
Still. My immune system must have sampled many types of mould and harmful bacterial diseases or whatever. "making him virtually indestructible" (Captain Scarlet quote. Remember that?).![]()
I take it through the car wash fortnightly or thereabouts, but I do the interior daily, vacuuming it at home when it needs it, washing the mats, mopping the flooring in the back etc. Sadly the whole left side of the van is badly dented and damaged, and has been in the whole time I’ve been driving it — a whole year now — which rather detracts from its cleanliness. The right-hand side of the van would look great in RM promotional material though!
Yes, I know what you mean re building up the old immune system. A steering wheel harbours more germs than a toilet! Our Partners and Doblos are DISGUSTING inside and out. One of the Doblos stinks of urine and sweat mixed together and makes me heave just opening the door, and another reeks of human sh*t!

I can’t believe you aren’t being charged monthly for taking a van home. That happens at ours. Even my utopian office has negatives it seems.

Re: Manager calling on rest week
No DPR driver at ours gets to retain a van, and not one of the few posties who are still allowed to take a van home, gets to take a large van home.

I might then need to raise a countercharge for parking! The fact we have a very large fleet and a very small yard may have something to do with it.

But in theory at least, taking a van home isn’t a perk. As per the retention policy I was made to read and sign, it is based on a business need for yard space, and therefore if, for example, the yard was suddenly big enough to accommodate all vans overnight, no vans would be leaving the premises?
PS I am a postie - albeit one who does a DPR duty!

Yes, if the yard was big enough, only a limited number of vans would be allowed to be taken home as a retention, but not one of those vans would be a large van and no DPR driver would be allowed to retain one.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 20:06But in theory at least, taking a van home isn’t a perk. Re: Manager calling on rest week
i will bow to your far deeper knowledge of the inner workings of each of the 1,300-odd delivery offices as to whether it is anomalous. However, I can say with certainty it is perfectly normal in our region and that neighbouring DOs do a similar thing — we have posties from other offices living on our patch who bring vans home, big and small — including at least one LWB Boxer!!Barnacle wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 20:13Yes, if the yard was big enough, only a limited number of vans would be allowed to be taken home as a retention, but not one of those vans would be a large van and no DPR driver would be allowed to retain one.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 20:06But in theory at least, taking a van home isn’t a perk. Okay then, if you say so. Even though I do a DPR duty most days, am I not a postie?Barnacle wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 20:36Posties having a van retention is not unusual. I don’t know why it’s like pulling hens teeth? You’re either employed as a postie or as a DPR driver. Both might do some of each other’s job on OT or a Sunday or something, but essentially you are employed as one or the other. As you well know.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 20:47Okay then, if you say so. Unless you also have some unique new job that I know nothing about?

It really is. I’m not sure if you’re just being wilfully obtuse. My job title is Postperson with Driving (Operational Postal Grade). Easy enough to comprehend for you?Barnacle wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 20:54I don’t know why it’s like pulling hens teeth? You’re either employed as a postie or as a DPR driver. So you are a postie and not a DPR driver at all which you could have stated from the start.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 21:09It really is. I’m not sure if you’re just being wilfully obtuse. No, you were just being difficult all along. All DPR drivers are employed as OPGs! As has always been clear, I am employed as a postie. But please do feel free to ignore me. Pretty please. Thanks in advance.
