occasionally clocking out on the PDA and shooting off home when I do LATs and from a far-flung rural DP rather than returning to the office to clock out...
What do you do with the undeliverable LATs? Also do you park the van at your home? Because that's a big no no unless it's parked on private land over night.
Also, what’s being described is ghosting and there are big moves ahead to end this.
How is it ghosting? To my understanding, ghosting is when someone is paid OT even though they are still within their contractual hours. It is dishonesty on the part of employee and manager. There is no OT involved in the scenario I describe. The exact hours worked are always recorded. The only leeway in the scenario I describe is being allowed to clock out on my PDA 10 or so miles away from the office.
If you are signing out at your contracted finish time then that’s not ghosting.
I’m surprised you as a DPR driver are allowed to take a van home because that’s not usual. Especially as you do not start early in the morning unless you are working 12 hour shifts? You have a van for 12 hours?

Glad my understanding was right re ghosting.

Although a DPR driver, I work conventional postie hours, ie, an 8h 40m shift. (Conventional for new-entrant posties, I mean).

And sorry, I should clarify, I don’t take a van home - I take the van home. As with all DPR drivers at our DO, I am fortunate to have sole and exclusive use of a lovely Expert, old, badly bruised (not by me, not yet anyway, touch wood), but clean enough to eat your lunch off the floor, and other than on my day off or when I’m on annual leave, nobody else ever drives my van. We enjoy regular trips through the car wash together, and she is the cleanest Expert of her age in the whole of the RM fleet! Might be unusual where you are, but it’s certainly not unusual in our region.

It would be ghosting if you spent time doing nothing and then signed out on the pda at your contracted finish time. They want to stop people being paid for hours they aren’t working.

Anyway, zero DPR drivers have their own van in our region so it isn’t the norm by any means. Must be a south thing.

Your post oozes inference and an almost accusatory undertone that I/we might be sat idle or stealing company time. I can assure you that if our productivity statistics or SISO data were in any way deficient our DOM would personally be over us like a rash and haul us over the coals. Things are very strict, but also very fair, at our place, and things largely run smoothly as a result. I’m sorry for you if your place isn’t run along such lines.

If we each had a designated van they might get more out of us. Sharing a Doblo with all the dash lights on really hampers productivity.

Ignore the call, if anything is said ask them if they would answer your call on their day off.

A crackdown would imply that things have hitherto been lax. As I say, our place has always been on the ball with these things — daily, in fact, with a printout of SISO shortfalls for the previous day — and I am yet to feature on the managers’ hit list!

This is exactly right. I’ll often get in first thing and be sent straight out to do some 9.00 am specials, to drop some missorts to a neighbouring office etc, just because my van is easily accessible in the yard and isn’t blocked in by other vehicles. I take much better care of the van as it is my permanent workplace and consequently the wear and tear is much less. It is a win-win situation for all.

We’re down to our last few Doblos at our place, but thankfully I haven’t driven one in months. If I am doing a deep rural 9.00 am special then I’ll sometimes take a smaller van — but never a Doblo, always a new-shape Partner!

I’m not sure the thread has segued. It is showing that a bit of goodwill and leeway in the RM manager/employee dynamic — for example, not classing an innocuous phone call on your day off as bullying or harassment — reaps benefits for both parties.

Just curious: who pays for the car wash? How does that work?

Long ago now I briefly took it upon myself to clean the inside of a few vans because they were so disgusting - using gloves and holding my breath. By the end of the cleaning: Litter gone; quick vacuum; wipe over the surfaces with anti-bac and then shined up with multi-surface polish from Aldi (less than a quid a can). All at my own expense and out of hours (about 30 minutes a van). However, I noticed that when I looked inside the same vans after a week (when I hadn't been using them) they where again horrible inside so I gave up. I must be mad to try.

Still. My immune system must have sampled many types of mould and harmful bacterial diseases or whatever. "making him virtually indestructible" (Captain Scarlet quote. Remember that?).

You shouldn’t even be contacted by your manager while having a break, let alone on a rest-day/week.
