How are Royal Mail organising rounds for 40 hour contracts

Post by norris9 »

So, we have had an influx of new staff in our large office. I'd say we've got at least 30 staff who started in the past 5 months. I assume most of these are on 40 hour contracts....

So, how much longer are the rounds that these 40 hour contract employees are put on? An extra 20 minutes?

How is management dealing with having 40 hour contract rounds and then having smaller 35 / 37 hour contract rounds?....

More specifically, when someone on a say a 35 hour contract leaves the company and Royal Mail bring in a new employee on a 40 hour contract - what are management doing?....are they sticking that new 40 hour postie on the 35 hours contract round?, or are they adding additional work to that round and then giving it to a 40 hour worker?...

It's surely a mess to work through, or am I missing something?

Not had a revision since these new contracts came into play but I would imagine the next time we do the manager will just cobble together a load of walks and people will pick the least s**t ones based on seniority. This will mean the part timers and the new starts will end up with the worst duties.

Looking at the current adverts and on there recently most of the jobs offered are for 30 hours or less.

What's the Union say? What have they agreed in resource meetings?

Same hours as the rest of us. Additional hours are spent on IPS before the rest of us start.

Contracted hours these days is basically whatever you get when on holiday if you don't qualify for holiday pay.
Theres that much work needing/not getting done that what extra tasks a person from 30-35-37-40 hour contract does varies wildly.
Not too long ago you had full time staff in at X time, part time came in at Y and we all finished at Z. Now there are so many shifts criss crossing each other who knows(/cares) what extra those on 40 hours have to do.

In speaking with the influx of new starts I learned they all start 40 minutes before PT start time, in essence undercutting any need to fill the dozens of FT positions that have become vacant in just the last two years.
The machine stops.

There’s no such thing as 40-35 contract rounds
All rounds are supposed to be the same :left: :left:
The FT hours are for work indoors - I.e. start earlier than PTimers

How can new starters spend time on IPS, as surely you need have some knowledge of each duty to be able to sort the post correctly, or are they really just spending time doing very little work to use up the additional time each day?

In our gaff, most of the 40-hour staff start now at 9.00 am. They do a full duty in the morning, either solo or as part of a pairing, and then they go back out solo in the afternoon to mop up wherever needed - either finishing what didn’t get finished in the morning (double or triple mail is the normal workload), doing other lapsing, LATs, tracked, etc…. Sometimes they do two whole duties in a day, though the afternoon duty is minus specials, customer-collects and large tracked.

New entrants can be anything up to and around 6-12 months. Not uncommon for them to do IPS in ours. After doing a huge number of different duties in their first few months they picked up IPS really quickly.

No wonder RM wants to move on the "old guard" if they've now got newcomers doing double rounds for less pay per day than somebody just doing the one round!

Can't see many of them sticking at it long.

Indeed. And I don’t think they really make any secret of it: the company’s financial docs proudly talk of a “flexible workforce” as being one of the company’s massive achievements.
