Royal Mail delivers record General Election mail volumes

Following the UK’s General Election on July 4, Royal Mail has announced that is delivered record volumes of postal votes and candidate mail – growing these by 50% and 30% respectively compared to 2019.

Election-related mail delivered to voters over the course of the 2024 General Election campaign included 50.8 million poll cards, 7.26 million completed postal votes and 184 million pieces of candidate mail. All forms of election mail saw an increase in numbers compared to 2019, with the number of poll cards delivered increasing by 10%. All postal votes handed to Royal Mail on time were delivered as planned, according to the operator.

Ricky McAulay, Royal Mail’s UK operations director, said, “Our well laid plans and experienced elections team meant we were well set up to deliver for this general election. We are very proud of our whole team of postmen and women for stepping up to the plate and ensuring we play our role in delivering democracy.”

Royal Mail processed over 70,000 completed postal votes on polling day alone, with an army of more than 400 van drivers working to deliver them to local authority returning officers across the UK.

Great numbers of course, but my personal experience was delivering huge numbers of election leaflets for weeks after emptying red post boxes full of postal votes.

It doesn't seem quite right and yes I know time was short after the General Election was called and I'm sure there were printer backlogs and deadlines and so on, but I think it could have been much better.

Maybe it's just me.

I think, rather, we failed to deliver a record breaking amount of election leaflets. Is Labour going to get a refund on that D2D?

I wish they would stop using these American idioms. Nothing could be more mentally vapid than mindlessly offering up a cliche you don't understand.
The machine stops.

We sent a full York of undelivered electoral leaflets back. But discreetly as the gaffer said.

A lot of our mail was held back last week in the mail centres so that all our election bumpf was prioritised. So RM are guilty of not only prioritising parcels over letters but election material over 1st class letters.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Wonder if any other offices did the same, we managed to shift all ours but it cost extra ips and prep overtime which probably defeated the object of getting extra profit from more work plus on some of the busier days mail got left in/returned, so really things aren't as rosy as they make out, yeah they can say we pulled out all the stops to deliver instantly binned electoral shite but that prevented some items that people actually might have wanted from getting through.

We sent s**tloads of election material back. We're seriously understaffed and the deliveries are far too big even when covered. Two or three days mail is a common experience here, and nobody wants to work past their finishing time. Complete shared van deliveries, bar Tracked packets of course, stayed in the frame on the Mon-Wed before the election due to insufficient staff to cover them.

It was a nice little earner. Nearly made £300 from ours and there weren’t that many candidates. Having 3x Tory drops helped. Nothing better than seeing them drubbed in the election while making cash from it.
