Let us be honest, we need more ‘flexibility’ when it comes to delivering parcels first time, especially using common sense when it comes to safe places. That and actually conversing with our customers and asking them to nominate places to leave items.

It would also be an interesting approach to offer subsidised parcel boxes for people, although they are quite cumbersome and not everyone would be happy with having one attached to their houses.
Kretinsky isn’t interested in any of that. His idea for the future of parcels is parcel lockers, where we deliver to lockers rather than homes. This would cut staffing and vehicle costs.
Do you think thousands of people are going leave their homes everyday to go into town and city centres
Lockers are everywhere already, not just in town centres. The new RM lockers haven’t been rolled out everywhere yet.

Personally, I think that the last thing the majority of people want to do is go and collect a parcel themselves, but they haven’t started selling the idea to an unwilling public yet. By the time parcel companies have finished, customer's will think it was their idea.
The Amazon lockers only seem to hold packets/parcels up to training show size the oversized are still going to need delivering even if we have parcel lockers covering the whole of the UK.

As somebody has already mentioned why doesn't RM keep a record of every customers safe place at the moment only the regular postie seems to know that info.

One thing he could do would be to allow PO branches to be able to sell Tracked
Agree
Always seemed/seems bizarre we do not sell that product through the Post Office

Or even in the Caller’s Office. The amount of times I had someone want to post something and then when you say we don’t sell the postage, they look at you as if you’re an eejit.

In the DO I work with 50+ duties we rarely get parcels stolen. I'm not really sure 50(?) packets stored in lockers overnight is any safer as once somebody works out how to break into them quickly they'll probably started getting raided regularly with the police just considering it another petty crime, like shoplifting or car thefts.

Not sure how often the existing Amazon/Inpost etc. parcel lockers are broken into?

No idea but with thieves breaking into everything else from cars with loose change on view to a works van for tools you can imagine they'll start sooner or later.

I guess it depends on where you live and work. You are right though, it again relies on the postie having local knowledge and using common sense. If I lived and worked in a cesspit area with high crime, then sure, I would not be leaving as many parcels in sheds and greenhouses. But then, I would expect people would not be leaving back gates unlocked in that scenario either.

There was an FT or Telegragh interview with him and I’ve just watched an MSN interview where he said the same things. He’s as wedded to parcels being the growth area as the current board are, which means that’s where the investment will continue to be focused which is all well and good but where is the growth in parcels going to come from to support this?

Unless RM have secret figures, which I doubt, all numbers point to parcel volumes doing the opposite of growing. They peaked during Covid and have now shrank back.

What is his plan to increase parcel volumes? Didn’t hear him say anything about that.
Parcels through the roof every day.
It might seem like that but there are no figures to back that up.
Well in my office we are scanning double the amount of tracks as last year and have gone from an office that clears with ease (maybe a little too much ease at times) to an office that is up against it especially on the heavier days with a number of walks failing.
The decline in mail has been overcompensated by the explosion on parcels/packets.
The figures are there. We have been told up 70% post strikes.
It seems to me we already have the majority of the market share, well that is how it seems anyway.

The last lot of figures I saw, had RM as having 25% of the parcels market.

At one point I kept hearing we lost a lot of contracts with big retailers...... probably because of understaffing and making duties ridiculously huge that a huge amount of parcels were failing to be delivered on time.

An increase in Tracked, is an increase in that particular postage label. It does not equal an increase in the number of parcels and packets. Royal Mail’s own figures released only last week or the week before, show that parcels are back to where they were pre-pandemic.

So your individual office may be very busy, but across the business the much talked about ‘increase in parcel volumes’ is without evidence.

If he takes over there will be 20000 job losses over the following years.Buildings sold, Distribution/Voc will be franchised out & delivery will have self employed on routes.
Debt will be laden onto the books, but the shareholders will be happy.
This tried & trusted method has been proved correct for Water/Electricity companies, why change.

Think they lost the contracts because of the strikes..now saying they have most of them onboard again.

Parcels are definitely decreasing in volume. People might not think so, because rounds continue to increase in size, and traffic fluctuates wildly throughout the working week, but overall there can be no denying it. During the pandemic, I would regularly have two pouches full on each loop, now I can easily get everything in one and they are not even close to full. Usually one bundle of mail and a handful of packets. And I deliver to an affluent area.
