You have to let them know as soon as it becomes apparent you can't complete.

I did that when I first started and was struggling. I was told it was too early to tell. Next time I waited a bit longer and was told it was too late to do anything about it.

Not sure how long you have been at Royal Mail, but you sharp realise that managers try it on and can be awkward. If you think you are not going to complete your delivery ask for assistance, if you don't get any assistance plod on until you are ready tie up then ask the manager "what do you want me to do with the mail that will take me over my time" then follow what they say, do all your bits and pieces before this, redirections, kill offs, locker visit etc. Don't be fobbed off by the manager. If you get assistance and you still feel you cannot complete be strong and ask the manager the same question, the manager will no doubt have a moan because you have had assistance and still can't complete but try not to get embroiled in any argument, no doubt you will have a target on your back after this so don't be seen idling, talking etc, they will use it as ammunition the next time you follow the overrunning procedure, your contract states that you work at a reasonable pace, quote this if a manager tells you that you are slow, your contract of employment trumps any unproved opinion of a manager, don't bother trying to be their friend they will throw you under a bus if it makes their life easier

When they added the extra to my walk it was obvious straight away that it was too long to complete by a human. This was pointed out numerous times, nothing changed, started leaving sections, nothing changed, decided to bring back bundles nothing changed, so now I complete by working over some days and some days I don’t. I’ve given up informing my manager about what I might do that day.

I’m likening this way of working, just let us take a reasonable amount out each day and crack on. No point managers trying to bullshit to us that the walks are manageable when they ain’t.

This was a long time ago - back when bringing a bag back to the office was unheard of. That got their attention. A senior colleague also gave me the same advice on dealing with management when he saw me delivering way past my finish time on a Saturday (tragically still earlier than we finish now).

Years ago it would bother me , but now I just leave stuff if I need to finish on time. I guess some office's still have the old school bastard managers. Most are realistic now so its not a problem anymore. Now the weather has improved I don't mind booking the extended to clear . Each to their own.
