I find it funny that I get quite a lot of passports that get sent via 'local collect' to a post office on my route, they just go straight through the letterbox of the shop with not even a photograph required.

Why? You'll spend more time messing about with RM's T&T than you would just scanning it RFD.
Duh. You only have to do it once. One time for one track.

Has anyone been shot for scanning twice?

If you’re scanning upwards of 50 items, does it honestly matter if someone has already scanned that one passport and you scan it again?

They would usually go through the letterbox of the house as well, so not sure why they can’t be delivered on the duty. I guess the recipient doesn’t know the procedure and might think that a signature is required, which it isn’t strangely and to be safe does local collect.

So many in my office don’t bother scanning to core route and no one ever gets a talking to or anything.
I don’t understand this because managers are bollocked if the scanning is not done and they keep figures on the number unscanned and are incentivised to drive that number down.
you can scan ready for delivery on your pda instead of core route
Yes I am aware of this.
The phg does this and then we are told To then scan them in again. Doesn’t really matter tbh just wondered why.. guess it’s just to be sure as it’s a big contract.
we've had passports given to wrong duties with the street name the same, cock up in the phg 1st off but then the postie doesn't notice the postcode and posts it, scanning again to core route shows who had it if they cannot be arsed to check the gps scan

I think it's because the locker only scans them as ready for delivery, they don't allocate them to a particular duty.

So if they fail, it looks on the data like locker failure.

They need to be tracked and accounted every step, they're passports after all, and its hardly difficult for us to do.
I don't know about the external T&T site but internally the managers know exactly who's got these and, at least in my office, the managers watch them like a hawk. When we first started delivering them the managers would go so far as to phone you on delivery to see what's happening if any hadn't been delivered by about 1.30pm.
These days they just wait for you to come back before pouncing on you for any undelivered. I've had a row or two about this. I bought about an hours worth of mail back one day which included half a dozen Tracked and one passport. Asked why I didn't deliver them I replied I ran out of time. On being told the passports absolutely MUST be delivered I asked why these, sent Tracked24, take priority over the other Tracked24? I pointed out that, if they were guaranteed, they'd be sent as Special Deliveries. Anyway, they took the passport and got someone else to deliver it. Half an hours overtime to do one item!
I've asked them to put it in writing that these are to be treated as Specials. No response.
I think it's a case of RM winning the contract by promising a guaranteed service for a non-guaranteed price.
Mind you, it's got to the stage where we're told they don't care if Specials aren't done by 1pm any more. Sometimes they fail to go out entirely for the odd walk or two on a Saturday but all the Tracked for that walk will go out.

We were told that they are charged a fee of something like £75 for any passport or HO visa that is not delivered that day.

Oh come on. They are passports. You don't get much more important.

Who cares what the contract is between RM and Home Office. Just deliver them, correctly, as a priority. Otherwise the only person who really suffers is the poor person who needs their passport.

Some of us still have a public service ethos when it comes to vital deliveries.

Yeah I guess so, strange though that they have taken off the photo on tracked local collect items, if the post office lose one of these there's not much proof that I delivered it.

Oh, and I was told it's £100 fine for a non delivery of a tracked passport

I doubt they are sat at home waiting for their passport to land on the doormat so they can leave the country that day? Most people get their passport week's ahead of needing them.

Although I'm not sure why there's any issues delivering them as they must be the easiest Tracked items to deliver basically, place in letterbox - take photo - deliver = job done! Far easier than faffing around with a Special Delivery getting signatures etc which could well be for something far less valuable.

Surely the proof is that you scanned it at the PO, if you were that way inclined you could just photograph it inside the PO and still not deliver it?

I believe that they are sent Tracked but no signature required because if a signature was required they might not be delivered and they have to be delivered.

Just a pity every company doesn't work the same, it does my head in having to get a signature for some eBay tat probably worth just a few £'s.

Recorded deliveries are an absolutely antiquated service. Given how little the compensation is, it should be ditched and photographic proof of delivery should be enough. This would allow us to make better use of safe places and get people their parcels rather than forcing them to be home. Keep special deliveries for when a signature is essential I guess but even then, I had a £1000+ iPhone delivered last week, and a photo was enough for DPD.

Your wish is granted, from the start of April it's now possible to wander into a post office and purchase tracked (compensation is up to £150) so I'm also hoping that will cut down signature items and more so unnecessary specials that in an equally outdated manner have to be attempted by 1pm :thumbup
