Hi, here's the Mount Pleasant bulletin of 21 February... Comments welcome!
YET ANOTHER PIECE OF PAPER...
On Monday, union leaders told us they had an
"agreement" on supernumeraries with the
company. But the problem isn't "resolved". As far
as we can see, all that's really changed is that we
don't have to leave the Mail Centre for those
ridiculous sessions on "making us employable"!
We still have to do them, but in MP, and we can
still be asked to do 2 days "job search" instead of
our actual jobs... "employable" or not!!
WE HAVE TO FIX THIS OURSELVES
Some of us "supernumeraries" are back at the
Mount, but are still being moved around wherever
we're needed, or even having to work on a
different shift. And for how long? We're told
nothing. We'd better sit down in the canteen to
discuss what we're going to do about this.
HE'S ALREADY SWOPPED SIDES
It turns out that union official Martin Walsh doesn't
disagree with the idea of a "re-deployment pool".
He told us in a union video update that it's OK, as
long as it's a "friendly" pool! He's going along with
RM's vandalism against our jobs and conditions;
he says "re-skilling and re-training for another job"
is a good thing, because "we will have fewer jobs
in the future". Can you believe it, this out of the
mouth of a "trade unionist"?!
THEY NEED TO LEARN THE RULES!
At our last Work Time Sleeping, management went
through their Health & Safety box-ticking exercise,
telling us we shouldn't lift heavy parcels and they
explained how to push yorks. But of course, this
should be addressed to managers. Since they are
the ones trying to get us to do all this heavy lifting
and heavy pushing!
WHAT A JOKE
For instance, management says "don't use faulty
yorks"... but most yorks around here have faulty
brakes, broken wheels, etc..! So yes, we couldn't
agree more. Let's stop using faulty yorks. And
stop the work.
"RACE TO THE BOTTOM" ALREADY THERE
We saw the Mail Centre Manager, with other suits,
enter PSA and not bother to sign the book, as
security rules require. In fact, there used to be a
special doorkeeper assigned to PSA, ensuring
everyone who came in, signed in. But that's one of
the many doorkeeper jobs cut over the past years.
NOT ENOUGH TIME
We used to just throw into yorks parcels for HWDC
without scanning them in PSA. But since we've
been told to scan them for the last six months, is
this now a permanent change? Well, this is more
work. We haven't got extra workers, so what if we
just go back to throwing them in?
PERSONAL ASSISTANT?
After most of us cleaners signed for new duties
during that long-overdue resign, the Elephant
failed to implement the changes. And why?
Because some of us "not-so-special" cleaners
signed for his "specially reserved" duties! He says
we need to be "assessed" for those before the
resign process can continue... Really? Of course
we all know what these "special duties" are...
A SIMPLY CROOKED PACHYDERM?
On a more serious note though, we've seen the
Elephant try all sorts of tricks to get his way in the
past. But to interfere with a resign process, which
cleaners have been waiting for, for so long, due to
his petty personal reasons, is another level. Most
of us want to change duties and we want these
changes to be made in order of seniority, which is
the way it's always been done.
PERMANENT GOOD FOOD!
When we went to the canteen on Nights, we
wondered what had happened? There was good
mince meat and roast potatoes (even the tofu
veggie version wasn't bad)... and then for
breakfast, there were eggs, bacon, mushrooms...
the whole lot! And how come? Well, both a chef
and one assistant on Nights were covering our
canteen workmate's holiday. This proves that a
chef should be (and can be!) on duty with her,
permanently.
WHERE ARE THE MANAGERS?
Of course the catering company running The Place
should always serve decent food. In the past
we've tried to make complaints using that
complicated computerised form of theirs, but it's
obviously designed to make us give up! If
managers had to eat here every night, maybe
they'd do something...
PS: As for having a sandwich instead, the reason
why the sandwich machine is always full is that the
sandwiches inside it are inedible...
