Change your contract old timer ?

Our office has recently had an influx of new starters all on the new contracts in fact we are fully staffed now for the first time ever. Since 1995 we have always been 5 or 6 people down hence there has always been overtime for those who wanted it. Soon there will no longer be any overtime once the newbies have all been trained up on the prime ( those always picked first at resigns ) duties. So I see two big kick in the bo**ocks coming our way. 1 The newbies are being trained on the prime duties to disrupt the postman and RM will no longer recognise seniority so even if you sign into a prime duty in the upcoming re-sign you will be told that "Operational Needs" dictate that you now have to deliver to the tower blocks without working lifts for now.This will piss us off enough for some of the "oldies" to leave which is their plan which brings me nicely to. 2 I am of the thinking that these sly bas**rds are getting fully staffed up so that when the newbies numbers match the numbers of us all on the old contracts they will do what BA Asda and currently Tesco did ie point out to the workforce that its unfair for two posties who do exactly the same job not to be paid the same or have the same benefits so they will put everyone on the same contract and you know that will be the new contracts. The vast majority of oldies will leave because everyone knows the CWU is on the canvas and about to be counted out and won't be able to muster a strike because the majority of newbies aren't in the union so a vote for action will not meet the required percentage under new government rules. Can the last oldie out please turn off the lights.

Not quite the same but last year we had a really s**t lazy "revision" it wasn't actually a revision as such it was basically lapse two duties rather than revise anything properly, the 2nd aspect of it was reduce some other duties to part time.

Yes you've guessed correctly, the duties involved were all better duties that traditionally you'd only get when you've built up seniority so now we've got some long service folk on s**t duties plus a bunch of low seniority folk on some of the best duties in the office albeit part time, but to really take the piss management quite often ask them in early to do IPS or prep on overtime, for some of them it's practically been permanent.

Yes we seem to be fully staffed again with new faces popping up to clear uncovered duties all the time. As mentioned a few of the good duties are part time with no full time positions becoming available as yet.

Our biggest expense is our wages (which a few years ago was around £5 billion a year) and ever since the company have been "rightsizing" the business. In the deal the CWU is committed to securing improvements for staff on inferior contracts and levelling them up on a par with those who were recruited before 1st December 2022; but it depends on the success of Royal Mail returning to "profitability" and whether it achieves sustained growth. For me this is all a bit vague and the anomaly here is that the company would suggest that one of the main reasons for profitability is due to paying staff less!! They have said numerous times that they still pay well above the 'market rate' and I wouldn't be surprised to see them offer some sort of bonus as recompense (it's Royal Mail's way - just ask your COM what bonus they got for taking duties out...) instead of any real terms wage rise....Don't forget there are still thousands of workers that are on part-time contracts instead of full-time, and many of them have been working full-time for years.

My personal feeling is that it depends on how strong our Union is and considering that thousands of postal workers have boycotted the Union since they capitulated and are struggling to recruit new members, could well play into Royal Mail's hands.

I think RM are probably biding their time until the % of staff on "legacy" contracts is small enough that it becomes cheap enough to force everyone onto the new contracts, even with employment tribunal costs factored in.

Reading some of the above comments perhaps rm's vision of a long and winding queue of people desperate to get a job, and let's not forget, that's paid 10% more than the "competition", oh hang on soon to be only a quid or so more than minimum wage isn't quite going to plan.
