Re: Later start times
Slightly misleading figure there, you can't inflate the hourly rate by taking it from break and acting like it doesn't exist any more. You are still at work when you take it.

Re: Later start times
Not necessarily. Many factors come into it as I said in a previous post we already start later anyway. Some offices local to us are starting at 6:20 at the current time.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 20:16All the DOs in our area are due to be starting about an hour later. I get the impression the further you are from a distribution centre the later your probably going to start.

That's blatantly obvious unless for some odd reason the DO already starts later than it really needs to.Nickvilla20 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:23Not necessarily. Re: Later start times
We do start later than we need to, by the time we start on Mondays and Tuesdays all the work has been in the office for more than half an hour or more and on Saturday the last wagon arrives as we are starting. No idea why and we have questioned it , supposedly it's so we have no standing about waiting time before we leave the office, in reality it just means we have later finishes than we needed to haveTopperGas wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:36That's blatantly obvious unless for some odd reason the DO already starts later than it really needs to.Nickvilla20 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:23Not necessarily. Re: Later start times
I remember our rep & com stating we will starting 30 min later as we are relatively close to the MC. This was just before the "surrender vote" last May/June.Nickvilla20 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:23

I asked another manager from another function. He said thats not true as they will probably feed the further away areas first otherwise these offices wont get mail before 11am. Our MC also feed places that are at the ends of the world. Told the guys in my office and was laughed out the door. The stoopid feckers are sweating it now.
Last month spoke to two different managers not in delivery & both stated according to the "pipeline" the earliest our office will get the last feed would be 8:30am probably later if the mail centre has to process it. One also said our office is looking like 1600 - 1630 last letter. Both said postie job is fecked and will be unrecognisable in a decade.

Or choose to produce kids you can't actually afford to have and then choose to work minimal part time hours in order to receive optimum benefits and you'll comfortably have a higher disposable income than a full time posties take home pay.TopperGas wrote: ↑11 Feb 2024, 18:58Unfortunately that's the way the UK works, get yourself a degree and whilst you maybe a lazy useless worker you'll still get paid more than somebody with no qualifications/skills who works hard and are good at their job.DiamondSmiles wrote: ↑11 Feb 2024, 16:05Really hacks me off when I hear people use the words 'unskilled labour' to beat others down with in terms of reward for the work they do. Seems like a pretty delusional statement from a "20+ year veteran" tbh.

Re: Later start times
I don’t mean Mail centres in mean the actual distribution hubs. If your Mail centre is within a closer distance to either NDC, PRDC ect then it’s less travel time into the Mail centre. Then again this is all theory and you never know with Royal Mail and they will probably impose a 10am start time across the board.TopperGas wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:36That's blatantly obvious unless for some odd reason the DO already starts later than it really needs to.Nickvilla20 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:23Not necessarily. I don’t know what Mail centre you work at so I can’t comment. Ours is pretty close to the distribution hub and the M25 so that’s the reason I’ve been told we will be starting at that time.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 22:28It doesn't matter how far away they are, it's ALL the DOs in the area that'll be starting about an hour laterNickvilla20 wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 21:23Not necessarily. The uncertainty will be over soon anyway and many of us will probably be looking for alternative employment.

Re: Later start times
The pay isn't that great when you take into consideration how much rental costs and houses are, especially when living in the more affluent areas of the country. That goes for any job that pays similar. Minimum wage should be £25 an hour based on how much the cost of living is. The problem is - £25 an hour minimum wage would destroy many businesses. It's a housing issue. I have no idea how any postie can get on the property ladder these days unless their partner earns significantly more than them or the postie does excessive overtime.Mike G wrote: ↑13 Feb 2024, 05:16Or choose to produce kids you can't actually afford to have and then choose to work minimal part time hours in order to receive optimum benefits and you'll comfortably have a higher disposable income than a full time posties take home pay.TopperGas wrote: ↑11 Feb 2024, 18:58Unfortunately that's the way the UK works, get yourself a degree and whilst you maybe a lazy useless worker you'll still get paid more than somebody with no qualifications/skills who works hard and are good at their job.DiamondSmiles wrote: ↑11 Feb 2024, 16:05Really hacks me off when I hear people use the words 'unskilled labour' to beat others down with in terms of reward for the work they do. Most of the time the job is stress free, but for some reason I get put into a massively stressful situation every 4 or 5 months caused by manager's harassment and lies.
Starting later and finishing later will probably be ok for me, depends what the traffic is like coming home from work and whilst out on my round at that ~3pm period (school pick-up).

That's the way the whole world works. Having a degree is no guarantee of common sense or a work ethic but it's worth far more than merely the supposed ability to "work hard".

Re: Later start times
So we were, until mid-January, starting at 6.54am. It was then changed to the current start time of 7.15am. We've just been told that in June we will now be starting at 8.37am! WTF.
