Need help regarding van accident/insurance
2 days ago I clipped a taxi's wing mirror as I was passing it. It was my first time ever having an accident driving. I said to the guy how much do you reckon it would cost and is there any way we could sort it out between us (basically panicked because I thought i'd get in trouble at work). He said he would try to find out some prices and take it from there. I gave the guy my name and number.
Anyway when i got back to the office i reported it to the manager as I thought it was probably better to do that to cover myself. The manager was sound about it.
I phoned the other driver and told him i reported it to royal mail because it was our policy and could i get his details which he provided. He asked me for our insurance details. I asked my boss and he said he doesnt get them, he needs to go through his insurance who then go through royal mail. I told him this.
Today he texts me saying he doesnt want to go through insurance. Also that he's seeking legal advice because we're supposed to provide him with insurance details? Is that true?
I'm worried this dude is not gonna go through insurance and is gonna harrass me for the money

Give him your managers number and let him sort it.

Re: Need help regarding van accident/insurance
Even with RM insurance details they won't deal with an individual and pay him direct for repairs it has to be via the insurance companies. My daughters car was hit by an supermarket delivery van a few years ago and we didnt want to go through her insurance to give them an excuse to increase her premium even though it wasn't her fault. Long story short, the supermarket refused to deal with us direct and wanted her insurance company details. The same should also apply with your taxi driver. Either he goes via his insurance and let's them handle it or drops the case and pays his own repairs.

Exactly. You are driving under RM insurance. Why would you try and pay under the table for an accident on their time?

All you legally need to give a third party is your name and address and the vehicle owners name and address. If he wants to contact RM's insurers will need to contact your manager.
I assume the taxi driver doesn't want to go though insurance as, if he does, then he'll have to notify his own insurers even though it was a non fault accident.

You were naive to say you'll sort it, but as you say it'd be easy to panic at that moment. Just explain it's out of your hands now as you've reported it, and he'll have to deal with Royal Mail or foot the bill himself. It's unfortunate as it ain't his fault, but it is what it is.

Company insurance details should be on display in you unit and the onus is on you to report it and take photos not agree to foot the bill yourself. It’s an accident and these things happen, nobody gets fired for bumping a van

The only details ever displayed are RM's Employer Liability insurers?heraldmoth wrote: ↑12 Feb 2024, 15:32Company insurance details should be on display in you unit and the onus is on you to report it and take photos not agree to foot the bill yourself. You ring the number on the sticker in the van, it’s a joint RM/CWU one. If there’s no sticker the number to call is on your pda also.
RM self insure anyway.

Perhaps he doesn't want the hassle like we all might want in that situation - or another strike on his insurance (even if it's not his fault it's logged). Or perhaps he's not all legit himself in some wayCarson1990 wrote: ↑11 Feb 2024, 14:24

Apologise and move on. If you start thinking about it: stop yourself immediately and do or think of something else (over and over). You'll stop worrying about it shortly. Put it out of your mind and concentrate on today.

Just to clarify some misconceptions in this thread.
Royal Mail does not have an insurance provider, it operates under a bond lodged with the Accountant General of the Supreme Court.

Re: Need help regarding van accident/insurance
Seems fairly straight forward.
You tell him to tell you the cost of a mirror and fitting and you’ll pay it and it’s done and you both move on.
Or he reports it to his insurance company who will take it up with Royal Mail based on your registration details and that will get him the required repair and legal advice if he requires it(along with an increased premium no doubt)
He can’t have it both ways, simply ask him what he wishes to do and that you need to know by a certain time otherwise you will consider the matter closed and out of your hands and in that of your employer.
