One of my friends has been a postie for about 40 years. When he joined, it was considered a good, steady job with a smart uniform, some local status and a degree of autonomy on your round.

I was just reading the transcript of Cory Doctorow's McLuhan lecture and came across an interesting term from the educational sector: "vocational awe" - when you really buy into the grand narratives: our place in society, the illustrious history of the organisation, etc.

It puts a name to my own feelings about providing a public service under a banner that has existed for half a millennium and watching it being run into the ground for the last several years. In the employee survey I used to answer positively to the question of being proud to work for the company. It was the last question that didn't receive a negative response until I stop participating entirely.

But for bosses, there's a downside to motivating your workers with appeals to a sense of mission, namely: your workers will feel a sense of mission. So when you ask them to enshittify the products they ruined their health to ship, workers will experience a sense of profound moral injury, respond with outrage, and threaten to quit.

Time was you could lie to yourself that a wrecked spine was the honest cost of forty years of a clear frame. Given how many have left in recent years, it seems clearing half a duty isn't worth needing new knees at 40.

Everything pretty much bang on true - RM never needed to be privatized it was making profits most years.
