24/01/24 Mount Pleasant Bulletin

Post by jimallen »

Hi. Here's the Mount Pleasant bulletin of the 24 January... Comments welcome!

100 OF US UNDER ATTACK
Management removed our mates who they call
"supernumerary" from the building this week, and is
trying to force them onto a three-day-deliveries-andtwo-
day-"job seeking" week… So they're meant to
act like a labour pool? And at the same time, they're
supposed to be finding a way to do themselves out
of the Mount Pleasant job they've been doing for
years? This is more than disgusting! How can any
of us cooperate with this, meaning those of us
directly affected, but also all the rest of the MP
workforce?

HE NEEDS HIS COME-UPPANCE
In other words, our "contract" no longer has any
meaning. The upstart plant manager, still wet
behind his ears, feels he can do whatever he wants
with our working hours and duties. But that's only
because we haven't yet prevented him from trying to
impose his sh*t on us. So, we know what to do: we
sign nothing, we say no!

IT'S AN URGENT PROBLEM
Of course, this has been management's agenda for
a while, probably pre-strike. Union HQ has known
and discussed all of this with the bosses... But so
far, there's only a vague promise of a strike ballot.
We've seen this kind of navel-gazing inaction on the
part of Dave Ward et al., over and over again. In the
meantime, there are "supernumeraries", hours
forcibly cut, jobs axed and forced redeployment, not
to mention the cut in our VR payments! We can't
wait for the union officials; we're going to have to
decide on a strike ourselves.

WELCOME TO THE 100 CLUB!
We hear from our reps that there were "resourcing"
meetings with management last week, where managers
had announced they'd remove supernumeraries from
the building, supposedly because there is "not enough
work" (that's really a lie!). But we need to know when
these meetings happen, so that next time we can attend
en masse, to show managers what they're dealing with!
What would they do if hundreds of us went to knock on
their doors…?

THIS IS OPEN DECEIT!
As if this was not enough, management brought in
casuals last week and this week, proving themselves
to be liars! There were backlogs pretty much
everywhere! Yes after they've just nominated 95 of us
as "supernumerary", and decided to offer another
round of EVRs… Actually this is unbelievable.

ARE THEY ALSO "SUPERNUMERARY"?
And then we keep seeing managers on the shopfloor
doing OPG's work. That's something they've often
done. And why should we object, if, for instance, Mr.
Witless tips all day and ends up exhausting himself?
But what they're proving, is that nobody is surplus to
requirements. Not even them...

NO TO THAT TOO!
Managers are asking some supernumeraries on
days to be "redeployed" onto the night shift or else
they'll have to do the three-days deliveries and job
search… Management presents this as a "better"
option, but we all know that night-shifts are bad for
one's health. They want us to choose between the
devil and the deep blue sea. We say, neither!

THE PILE UP KEEPS GROWING
We understand Mr. Witless' stress, the level of
customer refunds is going to go through the roof! It's
very simple, the fewer we are in PSA, the fewer next
day deliveries, and the more customers demanding
their money back!

WE'RE NOT FLEXIBLE!
We hear that workers from Romford MC are also
being "redeployed" to local delivery offices a few
days a week. Apparently, their days in the DO
change each week, so they're meant to go when and
where they're needed? This is definitely not just
happening to us at the Mount! Time to get talking to
the other offices.

PAY UP YOU B*ST*RDS
We saw in the media that RM boasted it had its
"best Christmas" in four years. Nearly 400 million
parcels were delivered "on time", the bosses said...
But we were told that we wouldn't get the bonus of
£500, because we didn't meet their "target"? How's
that?

A PARCEL OF CONTRADICTIONS
Ofcom published their report on the USO on
Wednesday, and sure, they are offering RM
"options" so they can cut their "obligations" (and
therefore save on our wages!). It makes one wonder
what's going on... Didn't they say they want us to
deliver parcels seven days a week?

IT'S A SERVICE, NOT A "BUSINESS"
Just before Ofcom published its report, Martin
Seidenberg, the new CEO, was in the media
complaining that it's "simply not sustainable" for
Royal Mail to deliver letters 6 days a week, if it is to
make a profit. Great, that's what we want to hear,
and we more than agree: the entire RM should be
renationalised! It's the only viable option!

About time they dealt with the supernumery situation, the majority of these people have had several chances to pick new duties and refused everytime, they had a brief reprieve for xmas pressure but now it is time to face the consequences of their actions.

Get them all out on Delivery. Better still, start running the business by giving anyone over 50 the option to work at the MCs and anyone with a duty at an MC under 50 papped straight into the closest DO. :cuppa
