Disgusting vans

Would I be within my rights to refuse to take out a van in this disgusting state?

All our vans look like that. I removed a rotting banana peel from the door pocket of a van I had not that long ago. Also at my office, you are lucky when you get your van if you have fuel and no DPF light on.

Would be interesting to see what my colleague's homes look like.

Most of the vans at my DO are in a similarly filthy state and are often left with next to no fuel by the previous user. Whenever I complete the vehicle checks on my PDA I can never get a manager to put their name to anything that I have to give a "thumbs down". They always tell me to just mention it to the bloke in the key locker who, in turn, refuses to complete the relevant paperwork and just says that he'll mention it to the previous driver. It's an absolute farce.

If you take it out it's your responsibility, you can 100% refuse to take a van out if it fails on one of the unroadworthy checks. If the police pull you over and it has a light out/bald tyre/red light on etc, you've signed for it so admitted responsibility and stated it's roadworthy (regardless of what anybody in the office/manager tells you). Fill a PMT form out and hand it, to whoever hands the vans out. It's your licence and RM don't give a toss, I worked in traffic office for 5 years before and it was a big DO. Manager's will do anything for an easy life.

If it's just because it's dirty, a side door is broken or low fuel etc they'll do cock all though like you say, but anything serious flat out refuse, it's your licence.

Just noticed a bog roll in the passenger side. Surely not for having a dump outdoors while on delivery??

The van check in the morning asks about the state of the van on takeover. I would fail it on that basis and inform management it’s either not going out or you’ll clean it and claim premium overtime

I've worked in a Traffic Office previously for another company and thinking of applying for RM what does the job entail and is it a good job as opposed to being a postie or do you have to do both ?

Bog roll in the footwell all the vans are shite unless you are lucky enough to be given a spare DPR van while your regular’s in the workshop being struck with a hammer.

I did it on overtime weekends (before collection) and covered for traffic office manager (that job gone now). Now at our place it's done by somebody who can't do walks, and he knows every single walk in the office which speeds the specials up. There's 2 who sort all the specials, then when people come for vans and their specials they each give out one. I imagine every office is slightly different, but traffic office as a job is usually given to posties. Their job title is still postman/woman they just work in there.

Sorry edited, they don't do both jobs (don't do the delivery aspect) at our place because they come in a lot earlier to sort the specials, think it's 4.30am they arrive.

I laughed at the toilet roll too! We have some awful vans at our place, but yours is abysmal even by our DO’s standards. But in the photo it also looks like the handbrake may be defective as it is almost in a vertical, upright position. I’d refuse to take it out.
