Ofcom Paves Way for RM to axe Saturday Deliveries

Ofcom will next week outline options for reforming Royal Mail's service obligations that could pave the way for the abolition of Saturday postal deliveries amid warnings from the company's boss that it may require a government subsidy to survive.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Saturday "letter" deliveries. There'll still be plenty of packets/parcels to deliver plus collections so don't all think you'll be on Mon-Fri :Very Happy

I thought the issue for RM was parliament not allowing it, not Ofcom. Its not Ofcom who decides.

“Scrapping Saturday deliveries and moving to a five-day USO would require parliamentary approval.

Last year, the government rejected a request from Royal Mail to move to weekday-only deliveries, with estimates suggesting that this would save the company hundreds of millions of pounds a year.

"We currently have no plans to change the minimum requirements of the universal postal service as set out in the Postal Services Act 2011... including six-day letter deliveries," Kevin Hollinrake, the business minister, said last June.”

Why would the Tories pickup this poison chalice at this point, they'll pass the buck to Labour to deal with.

the government will always follow ofcom's recommendations, especially if as reported that rm will be seeking funding from the tax payer to subsidise the letter service, the tories will promote it as a success in saving the country millions in taxes by agreeing to reduce the uso should it happen before the next election, and labour will oppose it claiming 1000s of job losses and then still let it happen if they win

So if this gets approved it will be an 'official 5-day USO' instead of the unofficial '4 days or less USO' we are carrying out now? They'll need to recruit more staff, never mind lay some off.

Always going to happen. Pretty inevitable really.
Not sure how it would work with drivers and non drivers working Saturday (unless the non drivers just get mon-fri).

Rota men will no longer be needed so jobs will go, most likely most will just be by not replacing those who retire or leave.

Can see it eventually going to a 4 day USO.

It’s business talk. Empty words that mean nothing but isn’t exactly lying either.
Like me saying “I currently have no plans to have a dump.” But in a few hours I will…
