Tyrant in the office!

Post by scotchy1962 »

I thought i might just share todays rant from our latest dom/dim/com/who fecking cares.
One of our posties accepted the role of workplace coach and has decided he now runs the office, forever ordering people about and running telling tales every chance he gets. Today he wandered up to my frame and handed me the duty log and said "take that home and fill it in for me" to which i told him "I will be taking nothing home with me". Cry baby then run to the manager and he appeared and called a huddle, informing everyone how important this was and it will be filled in (All the time looking at me) and if you don't he will make you do it before you go out on duty, "fine by me i will finish on time no matter what" was the reply and he then proceeded to rant and shout all sorts of veiled threats aimed at all of us, now i am a big boy and can handle most things but even my blood was boiling and i bit my tongue as the shop steward is on holiday.
Herein lies the problems of this company in a stupid tyrannical nutshell, no man management, no ability to communicate and no feckin ideas apart from threats when all else fails.
Needless to say that i won't be working over or filling in the log on anything but contracted hours.

Work places coaches are a complete waste of time and money , dreamt up by the union and Royal Mail to do next to nothing. I’d rather the union rep got paid rather than some arse licker picking up free money for doing nothing.

Sounds like your new WPC is on an ego trip but it's pointless getting angry when someone else is ranting and shouting threats. Maybe the extra responsibility has gone to their head. Just have a coffee and spend 30 minutes correcting the walk log with the frame. This should be done within your contracted hours like you said and if you don't have time to complete the duty because of it then cut off.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Be very careful what you post on here as you have probably given away your identity if anyone from your office uses this forum

It is vital to adopt a robust approach to dealing with tyrants and bullies in RM. A small but sizeable minority of tyrants (c10%) exist in my own office. A metaphorical kick in the balls in front of their “mates” always works wonders, e.g. loudly but gently fat-shaming a large bully and pointing out his inability to exercise self control in all domains of his life, but essential this is done with a big smile on your face.

Very true, if only royal mail told the truth instead of covering things up regarding failed deliveries and our financial position we wouldn't be in this mess

Do you think anyone is going to have a quiet word with him and highlight that his attitude has changed and become a problem since taking on the coaching role? For example, and without arguing, why not plan to talk to the guy when it's just the two of you and state that the relationship in the workplace has become more difficult? Ask him if he has noticed the change too?

Maybe not. Maybe there will be weeks or months of snide comments, eye-rolling, tongue biting, go-slows, and complaining to anyone, ANYONE! in the office... accept the person causing the upset. All the time screaming inside your head "why doesn't he change his attitude/approach!?!" Maybe he does not know nor see it himself. Or maybe he does see it and he's worried, but he is ignoring it because he doesn't know what to do either. He thinks he is losing friends and it's bothering him a lot.

Yeah, maybe this new role is a full on power trip for the guy and his ego thinks his role is now way more superior. Or maybe he is feeling new pressures from management and he is just inept and clumsy in how he goes about asking people to do something.

Why not talk to the guy on the quiet and without ganging up on him before it goes too far and ask him what new pressure he feels since taking on the role. Ask if he thinks the role is challenging.

In the black and white "them and us" (workers and management) world he's unfortunately floating in the void between the two and perhaps encountering a lot of problems with little support from either side.

You want to fix something? I'd suggest going to the source and talking it out. Separate the person from the role. Talk about the role and not the actual person doing it.

Sounds like you work at office I once worked at, I have now left RM so couldn’t care a flying f…, seems to be a thing that when they make someone up, it goes straight to there head, fill the thing in mate. There’s an old saying if you wait long enough, what goes around comes around . Believe me it works seen to many people like that, they always get what’s coming to them,
