Need your advice.

Post by Broady »

I've started on a 30 hour contract. 6 hours a day. When I get in at 08:20, I've got to prep etc and by the time I leave the DO and do what I can (I genuinely don't piss about and really am not stop). I cannot complete by my finish time. Is this going to cause a problem because I'm on the verge of just jacking it in if the unrealistic targets are expected. Cheers in advance for any replies. I absolutely love the job but how the f**k do they expect me to prep for 3 hours and walk there which takes 20 mins and complete in time. I'd be out till 6pm. :Boo hoo!

Thought it used to be as a PT employee your walk was prepped or mostly prepped for when you got there and you just finished off what ever needed doing and got out? Most of our office at the moment is pretty much picked and ready to go for 8:20 with the majority leaving the office after break at around 9.

You either got have the don't give a f**k and work to time mentailty or just start looking for another job because it won't get no better, only worse.

Cheers for the reply. It was just all waiting for me when I got in. I mean s**t loads. I'll just work my hours. My minds made up now. If that's not good enough then goodbye. What a way to run a company.

Yeah he's hit the nail on the head. If your not prepared to bend double as a new starter there is absolutely no point in remaining here. Good luck pal

If you highlight the problem, tell your manager and make the rep aware it may get better.
Let them know why it is an impossible workload.
If nothing is done work to time, bring it back.
Actions speak louder than words in this job, always has.
Wouldn't jack it in straight away if you enjoy it.

The part time contracts are bollocks, if you have to prep and complete your walk you will always run into overtime.

I'm PT 30 hrs and NEVER prep
You are PT you shouldnt be prepping
It should be ready to bag up when you come in
You should be prepping on OT by coming in early on OT
Just tell them your working to your time but are willing to prep on OT

This discussion is timeless. Full timers getting overtime to double prep will not sacrifice their frame for a part timer. I spent 3 months entering the building to a part prepped free while my full timer was tying up. 3 others on my sector had the same treatment. Seniority is a marvelous tool in RM. It will never be any different.

There are many variables.
What is the delivery span in that office?
What is the traffic?

The OP suggests it takes 3 hours to prep.
In 3 hours you should be able to prep 3.500 - 4.000 items.
I doubt many duties get that on a daily basis, especially at this time of year.

No duty should be a 20 minute walk from the office.

If the office was still on a 3.5 hour delivery span, a 6 hour day would allow for that delivery, a 30 minute meal relief, 30 minutes conveyance to and from the office, 30 minutes to tie down and still leave 1 hour for prep. Depending on the traffic that might be deemed sufficient.

Without knowing any of the variables statements such as "you shouldn't be doing any prep" are without foundation.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Beg my ignorance, two years in the job and I’m still on a discovery mode. Do FT get paid overtime to double prep?
Been doing that for a while on OT, (25hrs contract), earning +2.24hrs ~

Yes, just work your time. I have no chance of completing most days. I make sure I deliver all the parcels and cut off letters (which is all the managers care about). My delivery is supposed to be thrown off for me by the time I get in but the guy is just put on the IPS instead. So manager can't complain if I have to prep it all, including D2D of course.

Royal Mail have made most of the duties too big in our office to the extent that they are not realistically achievable if you start on time, take breaks, use the trolleys and take it steady on an average day.

The only ones who seem to be finishing before their time in our office have come in early (unpaid), have been cheating the indoor plans by prepping duties when they should either be prepping other duties or doing IPS, not taking breaks, rushing round like a blue-arsed fly and cutting corners wherever possible (not filling in P739s correctly, dumping parcels in bins, stepping over fences etc etc). Its strange that some posties still have that job and finish mentality and I'm sure it will catch up with them one day.

Years ago managers never needed to come round to us all individually and ask us if we are able to complete and that is because the business is all about improving efficiency.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

We had a revision last year. Two walks were axed and their componant parts added to the remaining walks. My duty was already too large. I was doing 30 to 40 minutes of overtime to complete it. Thanks to the revision, to now complete my entire duty requires, on average, 1hr 45m to 2hrs overtime. As someone that was always willing to do a little bit extra to get the job done, I now work to time. I leave around a third of my duty every day. It saddens me but I feel I must make a stand. It is utter madness to add so much extra onto an existing duty so as to make it totally impossible to complete in the time allotted.

I am so f-ed off with the idiots running this company into the ground.
