Xmas tips for your round if off sick

If you are off sick and someone is covering your round, is it hard cheese that he/she gets your Christmas tips? If it were me I would pass them on to who is the regular for that round. Any thoughts? Anyone else been in the same situation?

I'm a reserve and have to clean up the walks that have been ignored while the usual postie is off sick. I'm covering 3 on rotation over the past 3 weeks and have been offered a grand total of nothing from the customers on those routes, in fact I even had one woman wait patiently behind the door as I fed 20+ bits of mail through the box, before opening it with an envelope in her hand and saying "you're not the normal guy" and closing it again.
Despite this our WhatsApp group gets "any tips today mate?" from one of the duty holders every other day

it's all down to personal preference
we always go halves on cash tips then give our cover a percentage of it, chocs or wine we keep ourselves, cans of beer half that too,
i've come off my duty for for a month but trust my partner to share it, he usually does
by the way, ignore the "don't go sick" comments, if you've done 11 months on a duty then it's fair you get the tips,
but what others feel?

I get sweet F A for being the day off cover on four duties. The guys who do it the rest of the week give me nothing. I suppose it’s tough Shiite but there we go.

What’s the protocol to be adopted if you’re given an envelope / an envelope is left saying “postman “ on it , does the person doing the walk that particular day keep it , but if it’s addressed to “ Steve Postman” , for example do you hand it over to the intended recipient , I would say you’re morally obliged to hand it over if it’s addressed to a person , but the generic “ postman” thing is a grey area , and what about sharing with your partner, my partner and I split everything 50/50, but that’s based on a mutual trust agreement.

If you’re off sick you’re not delivering Xmas so what’s the tip for? Leaving mail all year? Delivering D2Ds? Tips are not a given and like someone else posted if the tips more than a token gesture those customers will wait till the new year

Same here. I did a little test on one of the rounds - I had a few people give me money (£30) last Saturday as it’s the only day they are in and would I pass it on to the duty holder, which I duly did. I asked the duty holder if she was considering giving me any, and jokingly said or shall I charge her a transaction fee for handling the cash. She said no, it’s her round so it’s her money.

On Monday, same round, I was given £10. That went straight in my pocket as will any future tips.

Another guy I cover for won’t give me a thing either so I take any tips addressed to the postman.

I wish I could say I’m surprised, but when half my colleagues would give away their gran for an extra £5 docket then I’m not surprised at them becoming greedy at all this tax free cash.

Not to worry. I’m definitely not bitter and I won’t use their meanness against them and get my own back nszt year.

Tips have always been an emotive subject.

Throw into the mixture the fact that most people I work with are selfish ignorant bastards, and you've got a recipe for GREED!

I always try to be fair. My Relief gets most of the bottles of wine, because I don't like the stuff, quite a bit of the chocolate, because I'm fat enough and I normally give them a card with some cash.

TBH if RM could get the manning levels right this Christmas Bonus scheme would be a good idea, as at least the Day Off Cover and Leave Cover would be able to get a bit of extra cash at Christmas.

If I have a good rest day cover person I give them a share of my tips and goodies. I also tell them to keep whatever tips are handed to them but to let me know just so I can thank the customers later! This year my cover person is very good and they will do ok from me, but I believe the other posties they cover won't give them anything which to me is a bit mean.

Last year I had a cover person that cut off half a round every week for months, even though I left it clear for them every week. Consequently they got sweet F.A. at xmas!

I’m floored by the idea a float or reserve has to hand over a tip to the regular guy if they are on day off or sick. I’d be f***ing embarrassed if my float came to give me some money they had been given the previous day when I had my day off. It’s terrifying that some posties would just take the money off the float person as it’s “their” round.
They are not “our” rounds they are royal mails. We are all paid to post bits of paper and knock on doors so if you were off on Wednesday when Bob was given a tenna off Mrs smith at number 12 it’s tough f***ing s**t, don’t be a scumbag and let the float have the tip.
