Actually, because PT were in around 0630 prepping their own frames Saturday-style we'd all get out earlier in December than on a weekday at any other time of year - first letter 0930, last at 1330 with plenty of daylight remaining if four hours wasn't enough.
I don't think Christmas had quite the outsized impact on outdoor spans then as it does now, because call rates were much higher all year round at the time whereas now the slightest bulk posting causes a walk to fail in the summer due to walks being generated against 1930s mail volumes.

We used to operate a system called once over the ground.
There were no second deliveries at Xmas.
You would sort until a given time and then prep, tie up and take out half your walk.
When you came back you would sort some more and prep that in and then take out the other half of the walk.
The only way you could possibly have done 2 deliveries at Xmas and finished within your contracted hours would be by leaving the sorting to your colleagues.
But given the staffing levels we had back then I don't remember there ever being a need to cover 2 deliveries.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
Our boss has asked us to come in early,after what they have done to us in this last year absolutely no chance ,really looking forward to my lie in, deliver xmas they should of thought of that when they were cutting sick pay and ihr,i look after my health now by not pushing that little bit more,as Dave said on LBC the biggest mistake Royal Mail have ever done was attacking its workforce,WE WILL NEVER FORGET !!!
If only this was true mate. I turned up at the new time on Monday to be greeted by a nearly full office. Was told me everyone was carrying on coming in early. I made it clear they could count me out! Most people have already forgotten how we've been f****d over ever since COVID. All the profits from us getting millions of parcels out then, killing ourselves (probably literally in some cases), pocketed by the board and major shareholders, then once we'd 'gone the extra mile' for that, t's & c's ripped apart and s**t on in this great new deal we've got cos the company's got no money (wonder why ). I just shake my head at the colleagues running round like lemmings, coming in early all this week as a favour/'for the bonus'. Can't decide if they're mad or it's some sort of wildly misguided professional pride or what??
You are getting overtime though surely? You aren’t doing them the favour unpaid. Fair enough if you don’t want to do it. Nobody should be pressured to start early for whatever reason.

I still talk to many ex-posties as many of my old colleagues are also friends. Things were so different back then. Like today, at least an hour was spent driving back to the depot and then doing indoor work/pouching off before eventually signing out. When we had single daily delivery we just finished on the round and any slipped parcels were just left at the local post office. Even at Xmas most of us didn't bother coming back to the office. The park and loop shared van lark started all that and led to lapsing, a real money-spinner for the company.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Working rest day so double pay i'm guessing
SB is on the new contracts, ot will be paid 1.25 x normal rate of £14.60 for over 40 hours so £173 at £18.25 per hour is not too unrealistic, 9.5 hours pay.
