It wouldn’t surprise me if these later starts are ‘delayed’ when March rolls around. RM are beginning to realise that they actually need staff to do the job, and making said job less appealing to long term posties, as well as further punishing those poor folks on the shite new contracts, is going to result in a lot of people leaving.
Really hope you're right, but just cant see it

The cynic in me fully expects the new times to be up on the notice board for us to see when we get back off delivery on the 23rd.

Can’t we come in at the same time so we can prep yesterdays mail back into the frame before todays mail arrives? They won’t be able to cope with more delivery staff leaving.

Well yes. Why not delay some mail when later starts begin. Then come in at the usual time the next day to deal with that mail and some of the mail that arrives on the day. It’s not like they give a shite about mail anyway. There is no need to start later if mail is delayed to begin with.

I don't really get the argument for later start times, we work on a cyclical basis of constant moving mail and parcels 24/7 more or less.
Which means there's always something in transport constantly and as it's pretty much impossible to have a 24hr delivery due to customers and people wanting to sleep/not answer the door, we have to start and finish at sometime sensible on delivery, and i don't think anyone has a problem with the current start and finish times customer or worker.
Moving start times makes little sense/difference to anyone except the company.
We always have stuff in the system and in reality moving times makes no difference, if they want it that badly make them pay a premium...... oh wait we already have that.

We knew it was coming before the ink was dry on the deal, the union will not be able to stop the steam train that is coming. Its the end of saturday football, picking your kids up and the ones on the new contracts ,the union and 70% caved and now we will see the consequences of giving corporate companies a free rein.
What was the alternative then to accepting the mediocre deal? More strikes which would have potentially put us all out of a job?

The company has free reign anyway and has done for years voting no wouldn’t have stopped that or anything else the company has planned the only way to avoid the inevitable is to sadly move on to pastures new and I think with the later start times many will.
And there we have it the defeatist attitude, one thing is for sure we will never know now, people actually started to believe the rhetoric coming out of camp royal mail even our union leaders fell for it and totally forgot the ,stronger together, leave no one behind ,enough is enough and unity is strength, they forgot it all and with lack of leadership the members buckled and finished this union for good, they split the camp, left people behind, had enough and lost its strength ,such a sad time the job is finished and will become another mediocre delivery company where people will come and go and will never be the long term job of old.As i said im nearly done but another once great job lost for our youngsters because their parents gave in.

If I didn't believe that there is a deliberate agenda of failure, destruction and total collapse of the company, I'd agree with you, but there's no way things can have be made as pathetically, embarrassingly shite as they have in, really, only a couple of years, unless that's what's going on. For whatever the reason might be, the aim is to end RM working so the thing that will make half the staff throw the towel in, ending the early shift pattern, is a sure thing in the master plan of total rubbishness

If they are delayed they'll still have to keep on incurring the cost of keeping the 'planes in the sky? Although as already posted who's going to do an extra hour in the winter month if it means delivering in the dark?

It’s not defeatist it’s just the reality of the situation completion is huge in the parcels market and if where we make money. Without parcels Royal Mail goes under and it’s also easy for another company to pick up so no more strikes weren’t the answer because people would rather have their parcels delivered cheaply by someone on less than minimum wage than have a more expensive but better service.

We already become a mediocre delivery company I’m just taking the money until something better comes along an at this rate it won’t be to long.

There will be huge exodus of staff at my place if it does many are already on family friendly hours to pick up kids from school and I think they know this.

It all seems to have gone very quiet on the later start times front as well.

Think it'll be down to if they've already given notice to the people who operate the flights and to the airports that handle the flights

I honestly think later start times were floated as an idea to deliberately drive out the old timers and those more resistant to change. They definitely want to move those of us on legacy contracts out but the plan has backfired as they didn’t figure on people not wanting the job if you remove the best perk of it as well as reducing the pay for the folk they want to replace us with.

All of Thompsons bright spark ideas have done down the drain. I thought the later starts were to have later posting times for big contract firms.

The DPR routes in my office lasted all of six weeks before they ditched them and now they are presumably gone forever. I think we will start later but nothing compared to what they were originally intended and I think there is much truth to what you say in your post.

Get real folks. We will start and finish later and will be told to just do parcels and not letters in the dark, same as all the other delivery companies if we don't like delivering letters in the dark.

Don't forget annualised hour's on top of later start time's. You may find your duty time takes you through to delivering in the dark. RMs original plan was a 44 HR week in the busy winter period, now the deal's been done they have pretty much free reign!!!
