We have been told people on new contracts aren't getting the £200 (or pro rata) by our union rep but he seemed unsure. Anyone else aware of this as it will be another kick in the teeth eg. Lower standard wage no delivery suppment etc for doing the exact same job
There is case law on this very point which makes me think your union rep is most definitely wrong and is just stirring up tensions/resentment…

Very strange
I worked in the legal arena for 18 years and so know just a weeny bit about employment law. I’m new to Royal Mail, yes, but that same law applies equally, if not more so, to Royal Mail —not least because the leading “detriment” case I have in mind actually involved Royal Mail and its subsidiary Angard and was precisely on the subject of a Christmas bonus not being paid to temporary and agency workers.

Can you explain how that is “very strange”?

Strange? Don't you know Royal Mail are the bastions of employment law, case law says no so of course Royal Mail will never undermine employment or anything for that matter. Where have you been, this is Royal Mail, not some other parcel delivery firm. Royal Mail is better, 10 per cent better to be specific.

Everything is running smooth and I get can't get enough of them, they are so amazing, letting us work for them, and the terms and conditions are out of this world, screw weekends, Tuesday is the new Saturday anyways, lol. I love banter, and love figuring everything out so quickly, I leg it now, I'm so quick, even faster in the rain but can still find time for a quick peak on this forum, in case anything negative pops up. My managers are so saintly too, real top people, sometimes I get a nice nod to say thanks for not bringing the work back. I can't believe what read on here, it's making my new employer look bad, and I can't help it, I need to set the record straight, I think the unions are not helpful and behind it.

I must admit I have worked in the business sphere for 21 years, that's my background, you know, the real world. Let's say I know a thing or two about business, this job is like a work in the park you know and the shareholders get the hundreds of millions, so what! They put the money in, we need to muck in, that's business baby and the executives, probably more then I could ever learn in a lifetime, but honestly there so worth it, its not like they're sitting around chatting and drinking coffee all day, they come come to my frame anyday, lol, Just banter baby, happy days 😀

Another poster who insists on dragging a thread off topic! This thread is about whether the Christmas bonus is to be paid to all staff or just those staff on legacy contracts. Satire and sarcasm aside, not to mention bad spelling, grammar and punctuation, your point is precisely what?

Hey smooth background, calm down, why so tense 😬 relax, I wasn't talking to you. This isn't academia, it is a postie forum, we can all have a discussion, I'm on your team BTW, its so frustrating sometimes that posties are constantly whining about their T&C's, you know the loss of sick pay for example with an increased workload, if they don't like it they should leave, sod the bills, just leave or take the crap, its not rocket  science.

But ouch, that criticism of my English really hurts, your so venomous, I like it. I admire your passion, your managers don't know lucky they all are. My point is that Royal Mail is better than the rest, and you are the personification of this. Royal Mail can get the very best in the business, the most talented delivery staff, preferably with fantastic English, lots of energy and willing to give their all for the benefit of the shareholders and the execs, they need to make money too, they only want a larger chunk for themselves.

I have to say I'm a little surprised by your not so smooth reaction. Please remember, we are Christmas but I will take on board your criticism, and will enrol on class with my £200 bonus, and hopefully I can become the most amazing postie just like you. 😀

While I don’t dislike your humour and wit – indeed, I quite like it – you still haven’t explained what your point is. I can infer some things from what you say.

But just to clear it up - I don’t “run” under any circumstances, I am just efficient in all that I do, and I am not “manager’s pet” and say yes to everything - I am perfectly able and confident to speak up for myself far more effectively than any union rep — and have already done so on more occasions than I would have liked during my short tenure at Royal Mail.

my underlying point was quite clear: it was about the poisonous union deliberately spreading misinformation among the workforce. For what purpose did the rep do that? It has to be one of two things:

(1) To make existing legacy contract employees think the only reason they’re getting the bonus is thanks to the union’s determination on members’ behalf: “Oh, the CWU is great. If it wasn’t for our dogged determination on your behalf, you wouldn’t be getting your bonus this Christmas. WE saved it for you. The new entrants won’t get it at all, but we battled on your behalf to ensure you still get it.” Blatant lies, obviously, entirely self-serving and just to prevent members from cancelling their membership. If I’m not mistaken, £200 equates to roughly your union subs for one year!

(2) To stir up discontent among the new lot and make them think they’re not getting the Christmas bonus, perhaps trying to sow a seed in their minds to make them think the union could change the injustice of them not getting the bonus. In other words, to recruit new members. I think this is unlikely, not least because new starters are positively against joining your union, and I don’t see that situation ever changing.

I go with the first theory I espouse above - that is, that it is to con/mislead existing union members.

That wouldn’t be enough for me to join the union as a new starter now. I can’t see any reason to join a union that sees me as a second class worker. It is a scandal that the provision in the agreement that allowed for contracts to be reach parity with legacy staff has been completely mothballed. The union is finished if it doesn’t address this, as it will run out of members ultimately.

This is the paragraph in LTB 314/23 (Christmas arrangements) about the payment(s), only mentions qualifying period:
4. Christmas Pay Supplement
The Christmas pay supplement of £100 for full time OPG and OSGs, pro-rated for part timers
and 35-hour full timers (subject to the arrangements in Section 7) will be paid on Friday 15 th
December. The eligibility criteria for the Christmas supplement payment will be the same as
last year, based on the four December weeks (commencing Monday, 20 th November).
In the
event of any Industrial Action the abatement criteria will be drawn from the PBS agreement.
The separate payment of £100 (pro rata for PT and 35hr full time employees) agreed in the
National Joint Statement - New Incentive Arrangements June 2012 will also be paid on Friday,
15th December. As in previous years, any necessary top up payments for Part Time or 35 hr
Full time employees will be made in January 2024 in accordance with the actual hours worked
at standard rate, beyond contractual during 2023.

So true! The CWU deputy rep (is that the right term?) looked defeated and was merely going through the half-hearted motions when trying to get me and another new starter to join a few weeks back. Unlike the previous poster’s rep, he didn’t lay on any scaremongering or untruths and in fact readily acknowledged the dire straits the union is in. A very nice bloke nonetheless who is still happy to help new starters regardless of membership…
